Limeade or Lemonade

Many years ago on a very hot summer's day I stopped by the fountain of a drug store in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and I asked for the coolest drink available. Without hesitation the owner prepared a lemon/lime drink and I had no complaint.
Recently I was preparing for a colonoscopy. As I am a diabetic, I received a list of allowable drinks, among which were diet ginger ale and diet 7UP which clearly shows both a lemon and a lime on its label. I know there are now other beverages similar to 7UP, but only 7UP was mentioned. Both of these beverages are universally available, but Canada Dry Ginger Ale made with real ginger is my preference, otherwise I'll add own ginger. By the way, I add lemon and/or lime to most of my drinks. When ordering a gin and tonic sometimes it comes with a lemon wedge, sometimes a lime wedge. I never complain but I often use each, or both, in my cooking.
BTW, at a class reunion they ran out of tonic, so I said to try diet coke. WOW! What a delicious spruce beer flavour!

Does anyone know what the official designation "-ade" means? Is it the addition of sugar? As far as I can see that's all that would distinguish lemon-"ade" from lemon juice?

The resurrection

This thread was dead. Now five years later a newbie's first and only post was to resurrect this, and in the great scheme of things, I have to ask myself why.

KGB:rolleyes:

oh, lemonade. no contest.

when i'm out to eat at a sit-down restaurant, i order water with lemon, and a bowl of lemon wedges and i make, well...my own lemonade. i don't like the sugary-ness of their lemonade so i make my own without sugar. :)

When I used to be a waiter, people in the restaurant business used to call that jewish lemonade. (No offense intended to anyone that's jewish, I'm just saying that's what people called it)

Anyway, I'll take the limeade... with some tequila and triple sec ;)

Well what we call lemons down here is Citrus Latifolia which are persian limes, so Limeade x 1000 :p

Although i've tried the yellow lemons (Citrus Limon) and they are quite nice as well.

I'm more of a Stella man but if I had to decide I would go with lemonade. Probably been done before but what about Coca Cola verses Pepsi. I prefer diet coke as my non alcoholic option. I have at least a can a day. And yes because I'm English I can't go a day without a good cup of tea. At least 3 mugs a day!

One of the things coming from the UK to the US which was strange for me was Lemonade.

I knew what Americans accept as lemonade to be old fashioned or cloudy lemonade and lemonade to be the clear soda, kind of like 7Up. Even Orangeade here is more like ready made Orange squash than something like Tango or Fanta (they do have Fanta here though).

I think when I go back to London to visit, I'll be getting a saveloy and chips with an r whites lemonade!
