I was wondering...

I know in windows, it annoyingly prompts you every time you get a new application that would like to connect to the internet. Is there a way is OSX to allow and disallow some applications to connect to the internet? For instance, if I'm tired of Microsoft Word from connecting to the internet, how can I do that without physically disconnecting from the internet every time? Thanks
