Link preview workarounds in Messages - no more?

from iOS 11through 17 it was still possible to send a URL as a link instead of a preview by using periods or other workarounds – I can’t seem to find a way to do this anymore. Any URL is automatically converted to a previous card as soon as it is pasted.

Anyone find a new workaround? (PS: Link previews are insecure and stupid.)

if you have text selected on the page, the preview will be that text, I'm assuming that's all formatted in the link, and not pulling anything from the web.

If you tap the preview that shows up a pop-up menu appears that lets you change it to a text link.
