I'll check into it. Mine requires smart cards, so I doubt it will work.

My shop is so MIcrosoftian it hurts LOL.

That shouldn't be an issue, I've been using smart cards on Linux since 2013

Well it says there is an unsolved issue with smart cards for years with that program.

And I am not sure they would be happy that I used Linux as it is an unapproved way to connect. Unfortunately for me, they monitor and care about this stuff.

I just am not booted into it all that much. Between Linux not having a version of the "Windows App" for remoting into my work envirnment and then not having the ability to easily run (and this is my problem) the games I play right now like Teamfight Tactics from League of Legends or Apex Legends, it's just kind of superfluous. Maybe without my Macbook Air I use for most things?

I don't know. It might be kind of a waste of time until I at least don't need to use the "Windows App." Only Microsoft could take the Azure Desktop App and change the name to something confusing.

Exactly. Again, I think this is more of a statement about having a Mac instead, honestly. I use that for most everyday things—including remoting into work on the go (they have a “Windows App for Mac”) and everything else.

But then you add in the games I choose to play, and they all have anti-cheat crap. So it’s definitely on me.

I'm not a gamer that plays coop/multi-player games, so its not an issue for me. When I was on Windows, I'd not buy/play a game that had anti-cheat as part of the install.

I'm mostly a RPG and FPS type of gamer - I consider myself more of a recreational gamer, CachyOS is a great choice imo for that sort of gamer.

The only game I play that wasn’t working was Sins of a Solar Empire 2, doesn’t seem to cross-play with windows well but the game itself runs.
Otherwise Diablo2 and StarCraft work as do AoE2 and other strategy and moba games so it’s all been smooth sailing.

Yeah, I normally kind of agree, my latest obsession for single player has been Slay the Spire 2. No anti cheat there. Works on Mac, Windows, and I am guessing Linux.

But if I want to play with my brothers and friends, then it's Apex, it's League of Legends. So..........

this is why linux is not picking up. It does the same thing as macos/windows except with caveats as you mentioned (missing apps, anti cheat). So most people are like "why should i bother?"

really most people who jump to linux are people who value foss, privacy, decentralization, over convenience which is not the general populous including me. I'd love to switch to Linux but the macos ecosystem, reliability, hardware, app selection, beautiful GUI gives me 0 reason to make linux my main OS. I kid you not, i literally spend 0 time tinkering with macos to make it work and i am talking over 2 decades here. It just works.

I think Linux for desktop/consumers isn't going to pick up for a lot of reasons. Here's a handful of reasons that come quickly to mind.

• Market fragmentation, which distro should you use, each one has its own set of pros and cons. Great for the hobbyists, horrible to present as a viable alternative to MacOS and Windows
• Open Source, while FOSS can be a great alternative, it is its own worst enemy, initiatives that start with great fanfare only to be abandoned, or questionable decisions on design/features or slow updates, lack of feature equity with the closed source software. Yes, there's a lot of great open source apps that offer similar if not better features, but the Linux landscape is littered with abandoned, poorly maintained projects.
• Lack of apps, particularly Office, and Adobe apps
• Toxic Linux community that seems more happy to attack a newbie then help them.
• Reputation that you have tinker to make it work, many consumers don't/can't edit conf files, or chroot into the distro to fix a failed update, etc.

I think the Linux office situation is getting better - Ubuntu comes with LibreOffice and I can use it for most of my document tasks. The world really needs to get out of Microsoft Office/365 - the sooner, the better.

Even the most "mainstream" distributions struggle with standardizing for normie users. Handwaving away major useability problems in Gnome or other important components doesn't really work for non-IT specialists.

Windows 11 is set up by default to send all your data to Microsoft. And now there is some kind of situation with Microsoft messing up VLC video players.
