There are pros and cons to each approach.

Phone calls can obviously reach more people, as far more people have a phone. But phone call is based on far more limited data and requires more substantial operation cost.

Apps obviously generate far more data, both true and false. But I think this is a good thing. Educating people where their hotspots are is a great reminder to wear masks and practice social distancing. I would love to know where I should practice extra caution.

I'm not a fan of the direction these things head in - but I can see the value of it. Just a 'heads up', so a person could be mindful, and go take a test instead. Now if there are false positives, its going to torture some people's minds! Especially in my line of work I go to a lot of offices and public spaces. It would be dinging me non stop!

I am super far from tinfoil hat wearing, but they are blatantly an extension of the CCP. Nothing good comes of their involvement.

They are super happy about this outcome. All it takes is few skilled hackers to get into these governments developed apps databases and get all the health data they need and who knows who and their whereabouts. Only this time the people are willing.

well the purpose of the API is the data is anonymized and frequently regenerated as to prevent something like this. im sure tencent has different ideas about how they can use this data against a populace as a whole
