I'm happy to respond on this! And thank you for your work on it. I would like to try it in VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro M1 if that is possible.
I now only sell the Linux Mint Debian Edition images for arm64. LMDE 6 is 200 Thai Baht (around €5) and LMDE 7 costs 400 Thai Baht. You can wire the money to my PayPal account (jjhdiederen at zonnet dot nl, see also the Donations tab on my website).
I have to pay my expenses too (website, domain name) and I need a lot of time and energy to produce a distribution.

I have MP 6.1 Late 2013, trying to revive it in Linux Cinnamon, but I am both terrible at MAC and Linux LOL. I have a problem trying to get Start Manager to show up on boot start. I hold the left option key but the screen just stays black. At this point if I can;t even get the choice to look at the USB to boot, I'm already dead in the water.

Wrong thread, you don’t have an arm based Mac.

I never had any luck installing linux on my early intel MacBooks as the latest  software released this decade is not playing well with my non- music speakers, keyboards and independent programs. I would prefer to run any linux on my M1 (I have no idea if they are ARM, or care) as this MINT software seems sketchy as the OP wants to PM mistakes and issues.
try OCLP on you MP as there are some threads have better support than here.

Jeroen Diederen

you seem too shady and arrogant to post a thread that can damage one's Mac.
these demands for a PM reply is sneaky
then we have the audacity to command someone here that they are in the wrong thread.
this website is for rumors, and help as that is all the person did, ask for help.

Hi MDAIr2010. Thanks for the input. Yes I just heard about OCLP and will look at this If nothing pans out. I got really excited about using linux again. It's been many years since I had once installed it on a PC. So much seems to have improved (AND NOT) LOL.

Hello,

My name is Jeroen and I am the developer of MintPPC, a port of Linux Mint to the powerpc architecture.

I have now ported Linux Mint Debian Edition 6 cinnamon to arm64. The stable release of 1 September 2025 is based on packages from Linux Mint "Xia" in a Debian "Trixie" base. Shelf life is until June 2035.

If you are interested to install or try the live system, contact me.

Regards,
Jeroen
Any thought of porting LMDE 7 ?

Since today I am able to run LMDE 7 arm64 Gigi with the updated packages like cinnamon 6.6 in a virtual machine. This is very good news. Users of LMDE 7 arm64 will now be able to upgrade to the latest Gigi based on Zena. There is a newly spinned iso based on this.

I am running Ubuntu LTS on my 2012 Mini, no problems. I have also tried and installed Lint Mint from linuxmint.com as well, though I prefer Ubuntu. This is a weird thread.

Just doing a quick google, it seems that there are mainline distros that already offer arm64 support, such as fedora, arch, kali, ubuntu (as noted).

I wonder what the differences are between ubuntu 24.04 LTS and the OP's linux mint derivative. Obviously its using the Mint distro (which is built from ubuntu's LTS) but is it ubuntu's arm64 code base?

This is Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 for arm64. The base is Debian, therefore it is called Debian Edition. You can see it in the screenshot. You see a fastfetch print, with a Debian logo with a 'm' in it, it is the official LMDE icon.

The official Intel Linux Mint offers two editions: one based on Ubuntu and one based on Debian.

This also applies to my LMDE 7 arm64 release.

edit April 1 2026: LMDE 7 based on Zena is available for arm64. It runs great natively on Mac M1 or on any arm based Mac in Parallels or UTM.

If you are interested to install or try the live system, contact me.

I have found using various distros including Mint, is that Ubuntu is my preferred choice now. It tends to be very stable, it breaks less and it offers the best support. Typically if you have a how do I do this on Linux question, it invariably will be linked to Ubuntu.
