I have been using fast user switching for years now and notice what seems to be a pretty major missing feature in Lion. In 10.6 and 10.5 (at least) I used to be able to switch to a different users after coming out of sleep.

For example, the computer is shared between two people. Fast user switching is enabled and there is a proper toolbar menu. Very often, the person using the computer walks away from it when they are done. The left logged in. After a set time period, the machine will go into sleep mode. Now, when a another person comes up to the computer and wakes it, you immediately get a login screen with the last person who was logged in name and a password box. There is also a button that allows you to do back to the real login screen and select another user to login. This button seems to be missing in Lion.

As I see it, there is no way for someone other than the logged in user to use a Lion machine after it wakes from sleep unless they know the loged in users password, so they can login as that person then switch users from the fast user switching toolbar item.

    Any thoughts?

Ok, here is an update... I did a fresh install of Lion (formatted Drive) and the switch user button is now visible. Not sure what the difference is between a upgrade install and a fresh install.

Shouldn't be much. Were you using FileVault? Did you enable all users for unlocking the drive?

I ask because I do and I, too, don't see a switch users button.

More observations... on the fresh install, there is no option to reboot into safari... Seems like the Switch User button is replacing that on the login screen. Not sure where the option is to enable rebooting into safari only mode.

I read somewhere else that you need iCloud for that but haven't verified it. That button just kind of appeared so far as I'm concerned-- I didn't connect its appearance to anything I did.

It may seem a bit strange but since restart to safari is essentially there to coax a thief (or honest finder) into getting online with the computer so it can tell Apple where it is, it makes some sense.

Before I did the reinstall, I did have the iCould beta installed. I Didn't install it on this fresh install though. I wasn't planing on it either. iCloud isn't quite ready for me to convert my MobileMe account full time yet.
