Lion, more heat and fan noise? (2011 MBP)

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem after installing Lion. Just now, I was using Safari and ITunes, and the temp was around 60-70F and the fans were running around 2400rpm - 2800rpm. Than I opened Pixelmator and Photoshop, and it went up to 80F and the fans were running around 3400rpm to 3600rpm.

Me too. 2011 MBP 13" and I'm not sure I've ever even heard the fan run before. But the A/C is running, the room is cool, and I can still hear the fan. I've been watching the activity monitor, and nothing seems to be revving the CPU much. Safari occasionally jumps the percentage but never that much, and only for a couple seconds. The fan just runs.

And I've noticed a sharp decrease in battery life since installing Lion. Sucking it down WAY faster now. I brought it to a full charge night before last. When I opened the lid next morning it was at 94%. That never happened before Lion. And this morning it lost another 8%, going from 73% to 65%. Prior to Lion I never had a fan or battery issue. I always quit Safari when I'm not using it.

I hope this is something Apple fixes, and soon!

definitely hotter (and so, lots more fan), on my late-2008 13" macbook.

otherwise, speed feels the same as SL, and am enjoying adapting to Lion (bugs notwithstanding...)

Ok then,

Just download Fan Control http://www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl

And just set your own fan speed control curves! Simple.

I have mine set to run at around 3000 rpm to keep it cool during low use periods (I think the default is 2700) but then tell it go into automatic when it's needed. Be careful, you can also suppress the fan speedup as well even if the temps start rising!

Solved?

Same problem here on my early 2007 MBP - lots of fan noise doing operations that with SL would not have got the fans running (safari, iTunes, just the basics).

heat fans solved at least for the moment

Hi all
I'm running a 2009 MBP with Lion and have tried everything i could to reduce heat / noise, SMC reset, PRAM etc. I downloaded ONYX for Lion and ran all the maintenence scripts possible and two days later I'm working on a much cooler Laptop so I would recommend this to everyone who is experiencing Heat / fan issues

Apply new cooling paste. That did the trick for me

I bought Arctic Silver cooling paste (good stuff) from Ebay and found the procedure on ifixit.
Not difficult but get the right tools
Tips:
Buy the arctic silver paste WITH the 2 bottles/compotents of cleaning stuff.
get extra ear buds
get extra tissue
get an old credit card (easy apply the paste onto heatsink and processors)
buy about 20 disposable cups (or get 2 empty/clean egg trays)
print out the procedure and print out the photos in large size.
Number each photo
Number each cup (similar to each photo)
make sure you have good lighting
get a good flashlight.

Why these cups? Lots of different size screws!
Why the large size photos? To see in details which connectors to be released

It's not difficult, just follow the procedure step by step!

I reduced my temp with approx 15 degrees Celsius (and the ambient temp is high here in the tropics).

Mine is Macbook pro mid 2009. BTW nvidia graphic card. I did have overheat problem in 10.7 and 10.7.1. But in 10.7.2, it is fine now.

I think apple just fix the graphic card problem, cuz in 10.7, Lion cannot use integrated graphic card

Try first this if you have MS office installed. Delete that spotlight plugin.
My mac is 15C cooler after this.
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1260083/

It fixes a lot of another mystical Lion related issues also (Time Machine etc.).

Edit: basicly that MS office spotlight plugin messes up the spotlight and multiple another things, almost the whole operating system.

Edit2: After I deleted that plugin my os x Lion is as solid as Snow Leopard + is more faster.
