Lion Upgrade For Newbie

Purchased my 1st Mac two weeks and was wondering if upgrading to Lion from Snow Leopard is necessary or advisable. I am quite happy with my current setup but I am thinking I may get left in the dust ar some
point when apps may only be useable with Lion?
 
Lion is a great update but if you are happy for the moment there's no harm in waiting a couple of months for the first round of bug fixes to get released.
