My wife and I both have horrible fathers. If you're going to get a woman pregnant, you need to be prepared to put your life on hold. I couldn't imagine any scenario where I would abandon my daughter. Fathers who do this are *******s. There is no sugar coating it. We need to stop saying "But they're really successful, etc so it's okay." It is never okay. It is completely unacceptable, full stop.

Spot on.

I'm going to refrain from calling this an attempt to cash in because:
1. She probably doesn't need the money
2. She's actually an accomplished writer

I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't have several hundreds of millions.

Didn't Jobs like ... not want to be in her life?

Early on, he was incredibly driven to work to succeed. Settling down, taking a job that wasn't his ideal, that was too much for him to consider. I think he was in such a mental state he likely convinced himself he wasn't the father, or that he had to be cruel to get things done, at least. As he matured, particularly after he got married, he saw the incredible wrongness of all that. I know that Lisa was with his family to visit quite frequently later on. Jobs himself was abandoned by his father, and had absolutely no desire to see him later.

She was forced to wear a T-shirt that said, "90 hours of homework a week and LOVING IT!"

"Daddy, I drew you a pony!"

"It's all out of proportion, and it's not even the right color! Who ever heard of a blue pony! This is total ****!"

It’s her life and she can talk about it if she chooses. Also it’s her father so she knows more about his character than any of us.
We agree on your first point. Never said she couldn’t. As to your second point, that may be true but I think it’s a low person who sits in a comfy chair and criticizes someone based on such an account. Remember Mia Farrow falsely alleging that Woody Allen abused their daughter? Remember the Duke lacrosse players or the false UVA rape allegation in Rolling Stone? Remember Tawana Brawley? Every one of them sounded compelling and everyone attacked the accused like sharks in a feeding frenzy, much to their shame later on. I’m not, repeat not, suggesting that Lisa’s story isn’t true, but everyone can have agenda, my friend. When hearing their stories, I caution against joining the lynch mob, especially when the only person who could provide context, explanation, and remorse is now dead. Outrage is diminished when used indiscriminately as a blunt instrument.

To be fair, I haven’t read Lisa’s account and I probably will. But the above is just a guiding principle I’ve learned over the years.

The most important job one ever has is that of a parent.

I believe Steve was estranged from his birth parents as well. It probably affected his parenting.

He was given up for adoption, so that's about as estranged as you can get.

No excuse, really. As intellectually smart as some people may be, they may very well lack emotional intelligence. This is the place where you find empathy for your fellow human beings. Definitely not Steve's strong suit.

Yeah, people sometimes ask me why I don't move out to the coast and join some startup or develop my own, given my background and skillset. But why? Money? Who gives a flying frog about money? I already have plenty. I want to focus on my family and making sure that I'm there for them and raise them properly. You don't need money to be happy, although having just enough money reduces stress, and my wife and I have just enough. Other people want fame or power. Never understood that either. Most famous people seem miserable. Most people with too much power are eventually corrupted or end up with many enemies. I just want to lay low and chill with my family and be the best dad possible. I can see how it's a different story if you're unable to make ends meet and have to work a bunch of overtime, but even so you can still find ways to be a good dad and providing for your family shouldn't be shamed. But people like Jobs, in this situation, piss me off.

Sounds interesting. I'd probably read it, but it's going to make me sad. Steve Jobs was a great innovator, and I think that many improvements in the tech industry within the 2000s wouldn't have happened without him, but he forgot about the most basic important things in life.

Jobs was a complete ******* to his daughter. He went out of his way to make sure to pay as little child support as possible. As brilliant as he was at getting smart people to be their best, it is all marred by his failure as a parent to Lisa.

Hmmm
It wasn't just Mia Farrow accusing Woody, the daughter he was accused of molesting had something to say too.

For the record, I believe Woody Allen is a paedophile.

They seem to suggest so? Though exactly what they mean by 8th gen is confusing, as some are already available. Do they mean only 8th gen chips not yet shipped?

It's not really clear whether they mean NEW 8th generation processors which have not yet shipped, and if so, is it ALL 8th gen processors which have yet to ship, or just some of them? Or will there be hardware revisions in 2H 2018 that also includes already shipping 8th generation processors? Very vague, unfortunately. Until there is more clarity I don't see myself buying a new device.

Remember Mia Farrow falsely alleging that Woody Allen abused their daughter?

Maybe not the best example. The daughter claims to this day that she was molested by Woody Allen, and there is some evidence to suggest that it may have happened, even if it may not have been enough to prosecute and convict.

Couldn’t agree more. Fatherhood is not easy but there’s no excuse to completely deny someone from getting to know their father.

I had one of those. and his father and grandfather before him. They were both convinced they WERE doing the right thing, by focusing 100% on their business and making money for the family, and all the other families that depended on them. Their position made them paranoid and obsessed with material wealth, which they conveniently equated with being a good provider for their family. The fruits of their labors were not appreciated as they imagined, predictably, and produced generations of increasingly demanding, emotionally stunted, abusive people. A cycle I chose to put an end to the hard way.

Right. If she says “Steve would never have allowed that to happen” I actually might believe her.

What is that guiding principle? Leaping to conclusions (or not leaping to conclusions)? Which is exactly what you said in a more subtle way.:) Or like bill Clinton proclaimed: “ I never had sex with that woman miss lewinsky”.

Same. Though my grandpa wasn’t as bad and realized where he went wrong and did a lot better later on. He’s essentially my dad now.

It should be an interesting read, it will be interesting to get a perspective of Steve Jobs that we only got hints of from the Aaron Sorkin film as she didn't interview for the issacson book. I hope it's on audible though since that's my preferred way to get through a book these days.

Fine to sympathize with Lisa, although I don’t know if she’s looking for sympathy. But let’s not pile on with a character assassination of a man we’ve never met involving details we don’t know. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

To understand the comments in this thread, you really have to read the post history of the posters. True motivations are obvious when you look at the big picture.

Anyway, I'll probably give it a read.

Seriously? The country is literally called Syrian Arab Republic !!!!!
Search....
There are no real Arabs besides Saudis, Yemenis, and Gulf Arabs (Arabs in the Persian Gulf). Levantine “Arabs” (Syrians, Lebanese, Palestinians, and Jordanians), Egyptians, and Iraqis were never originally ethnically or even culturally Arab. During the Muslim conquest which came from the Arabian peninsula (Saudis, Yemenis, etc) came and converted people and over time mixed with the native. Syrians were never “Syrians”. Syria was a bunch of Christian kingdoms with a pagan population as well.

The Muslim Syrians today have an Arab mixture, but studies find that its only about 30–40% of their DNA. The rest is traces of Greek , Assyrian, Aramean, Armenian, “Phonecian”, and etc. The Christian Arab in general all over the ME will have higher admixture of these ethnicities and only about 20–30% actual Arab blood. Long story short, they are definitely way more culturally Arab then ethnically although overall they are neither. Even their “Arab” culture is different from true Arab culture. They just speak Arabic but Levantine Arabic has Aramaic and Syriac (languages of the indigenous peoples) influence. Hope this answers it!
So...Steve Job's dad came from the area but without a DNA test no one knows.
