We still have some SGI systems kicking around the department.

I've never seen an SGI system, but we still have a DEC-branded Alpha server in the datacentre. I believe that it's running NT.

The most esoteric thing that I have at home would be my RISC OS machine. It's a fast OS but unfortunately development has trailed off to fixing compatibility issues with new hardware. Indeed the last thing I did with it was around adding touchscreen support to the mouse driver...

Has anyone else used an illumos-based distribution?

… Mac System X - It sucked. …

… After looking into this, I realize I care about four things.
1.) Stability
2.) Speed
3.) good CLI
4.) If it has a GUI, it has to look good. …

Wow, 'Mac System X' didn't ring a bell until I found things such as System X (Linux/OS X): ARC HPC Resources and VT-ARC: System X. Videos such as Apple G5 super computer at Varginia Tech (sic) were very memorable.

… Linux … I'd consider Gnome one of the best looking and functioning desktops I've ever seen, up to and including OSX.

It's minimal, clean, easy to use …

I love the cleanliness of Web.

I'll never grow to appreciate hidden scroll bars.

… I kinda like sprocket layers. …

I see them there sprockets every day, Mavericks, at bottom right when the notification centre slides across. I even shrunked my big-ass Dock coz its right-side ass-width kept sailing over one of them layers.

I'm glad to see Openmoko (Om) software listed by someone –

… Mobile Operating Systems:

Openmoko Linux
Neo FreeRunner
MeeGo
Symbian Series 60, 80, 90
UIQ
MOAP
Windows CEO
Pocket PC 2000, 2002
Windows Mobile 2003 SE
Windows Mobile 5, 6, 6.1
iOS ver: 1.x - 8.2
Android 1.5 - 5.1

– I was very interested in development of the Neo1973 hardware, in the early days. But that interest vaguely coincided with Apple's introduction of the iPhone, and neither device was compelling so it wasn't until 2012 that I got my first iPhone (an original, MB213B, refurbished and gifted to me).

Back before my dad retired(from the state department of Disability Determinations) they were still running on a Wang VS minicomputers. They actually had two of them-I think a 6000 that did the main duties, and a smaller one(maybe a 600) that served as a(poor) backup for when the main one was down. Up through the early '90s they were still using dumb terminals, although migrated everyone over to PCs and virtualized the terminal interface. The last I heard-around 2008-the Wang was still in use, although they were slowly migrating over to an IBM minicomputer(or small mainframe-they were in the usage area where the line between minicomputer and mainframe gets blurry). I don't think that they wanted to switch because it worked fine and everyone was familiar with it, but the Wang was getting to the point where the service guys(outside contract) were doing component level repairs to keep it going and their service contract went up exponentially every year. Fortunately, at least, the software contractor was able to keep the UI on IBM more or less the same so only the IT guys really noticed a difference.

That's in contrast to the state payroll system, for which the replacement has been in the works for 20+ years and no one really likes it. My mom retired as payroll supervisor for the court systems and actually had several part time jobs over the years because she knew the old system backwards and forwards(she'd worked with it since the early '80s, when it was rolled out to replace the previous punchcard system, and was still in use in some agencies as late as 2010) . She doesn't know the new system, but from what I've heard it's such a disaster that most agencies who have switched wish they could go back to the old one

That's probably enough rambling from me for one day, though.

  • EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to mention a brief usage of Ubuntu via Live CD

Quick update: Since posting the above list earlier in this thread, I've delved deeper into GNU/Linux, and now run Linux Mint 17.1 on a small handful of hand-me-down machines: two Dell Core 2 Duo minitowers with the Cinnamon edition of Mint, a netbook with XFCE edition, and an old Pentium 4 with XFCE. Before settling on Mint for those, I did quite a bit of distro-hopping (trying out Linux distributions to see what fits my style/workflow), including Ubuntu and Lubuntu 14.04, Puppy 6.0 Tahrpup, Fedora 21, and a few others.

I've also updated my iPhone to iOS 8.

Lots and lots, and I doubt you'd care if I listed them. I am currently running "BrainOS 1000.0" 24/7, with zero downtime in 41.5 years.
