Also, iTunes visualizer and GMail doesn't switch for me either -
I'm on the 15" i5 2.53 GHz model.

Hardware Monitor displays the % of load on the GPU.
That would be a nice addition to your app -- to know not just if the GPU is in use but to what degree.

For example, 3D Games may put a 100% load on it but some apps like Motion and Aperture that are supposed to be GPU intensive put a minor load on the GPU -- 0% to 20%.

Hmm, Cinch doesn't seem to trigger the NV GPU for me -

Tho that mini-app is awesome! *thumbs up*

What version are you running? What are you using to determine if it is using the NVidia chipset?

I'm running version 1.03 in the demo mode. Even the demo screen forces the NVidia chipset. I check via the System Profiler to see which chipset the screen is attached to. I can have nothing running and it will be on the Intel chipset then start Cinch up and it immediately switches to the NVidia chipset.

I'm looking into bringing support for that to the application, thanks for the suggestion. I'm torn about how to handle the icon as I don't want to make it use more than a 22x22 square icon size in the menubar. Maybe 44x22 is tolerable.

just have a 22x22 percentage. if it's over 0% then the 330 is being used.

That assumes that the Intel graphics are used for nothing, I think it might be interesting to see if there is ever any load on that device and what causes it or if it is simply used as the lower power means of dumping an image onto a screen.

hyperspaces

edit: mini-app = awe .... wait for it ... some

regards to the icon. Maybe have the percentage alongside (like the battery status).
Or over the top. So you see the nvidia / itnel icon through the space around the letters.

I so wish you could black list certain apps (eg hyperspaces and forever save) cause i have those loaded all the time.

Parallels 5: The GPU is activated all the time (with Windows 7 at least), even if you have 3d acceleration disabled in the VM configuration.

Should the running discrete mode so often be a concern?

Do you find the laptop definitely is running warmer and/or louder because of this.

Can we expect a software patch (from Apple) that will allow us to select Integrated or Discrete mode?

Thanks.

Biggest issue is it sucks the life out of the battery.

For what it's worth; proceed at your own risk.

I leave the intriguing result of the following command to any intrepid reader who cares to investigate further:
Code:
nvram -p | fgrep gpu

Just wanted to drop in and say thanks for the gpu switching app and that I HATE the way apple has handled this and seriously hope for an update that changes it soon.

What were they thinking?! Do they use these products in real life situations before putting them on the parket? : /

THIS ISNT NEEDED ANYMORE! Also don't use his program. There is one better.
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/901521/
in this thread forum user Bitninja has made the same program that is offered here, but he made it first.
Now not only does it tell you what graphic card is running, but what programs are requireing it to be on.
Now it allows you to force it to use intel! They have tested it and t even works with HD YouTube videos.
In version 7 due soon. They will improve the switching and have the ability to switch the previous gen uMBP graphic cards without logging out.

Enjoy your intel HD battery life.

warning! When switching you must already be on intel or both will run but you will be using intel. This will be fixed in version 7 so you can switch on the fly from nvidia without leaving it on to drain battery.

That isn't 100% correct. Some applications can't switch graphics cards while running, so when you switch from nvidia to intel an such an application is running it keeps running on the nvidia card and prevents it from powering off until the user quits the blocking application. Some other apps like WindowServer are able to switch cards and new apps start on the other card, so you're using both cards until you close all apps that block the gpu.
Thats unfortunately how the apple switching works and there's not a lot we can do about it. So to be on the safe side close all dependent processes and switch after that. The new version won't change that, but maybe there will be an indicator that both are running.

ShoveBox (including the status bar item) uses nVidia all the time.

And thanks for the app, I would have realized what's sucking power from my mbp so quickly otherwise.

QUICKSILVER!

Surprise, surprise...! Noone mentioned about QuickSilver with Showcase interface?

That's why I use Spotlight now. =/

I noticed that too a couple of days ago. The other Quicksilver interfaces don't rely on the discrete video card so why don't you use those instead of Spotlight?
