Not so fast

Due to a now postponed purchase decision, I contacted Apple to make sure that Final Cut Express HD would run on the new Intel boxes. They indicated that it would not (as you probably already know). More troublesome was the fact that they would neither commit to a date for releasing the universal version of express nor releasing a universal version AT ALL. In fact, the friendly apple 1800 store person told me that my only option for the intel based machines would be to purchase the $1300 final cut studio instead of the $400 Express version.

All this to say, unless you can find anyone at apple to say something to the contrary, you probably need to move FC express off of the "planned universal version" list.

That list cannot be trusted. I downloaded Fire and it was Universal so added it to the wiki page. I downloaded Gimp and it wasn't :(
I think they have the universal binary of MacGIMP, but they did not want to release it before somebody tests it on an intel-Mac.

i just added MorphX to the list, it shows up as a universal app on my computer - although on his site he mentions it hasnt been tested on an intel mac...

I found

http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/X86_software

it seems a lot of x86 OS X hackers have been compiling some open source software for OS X Intel ... like Quake 3 and Desktop Manager.

I wonder if they'll be able to test Mac OS X 10.4.4 compatibility. :D

It's good that we've got some interesting resources available. Should we trust what they're doing? I always wonder about people getting software from unknown sources, even if it looks legitimate.

Still, the more, the merrier.

I read an Ars Technica review of the 17" iMac Intel, and he said that he obtained a UB of Quake 3, but it didn't run .. it seems some software comiled for x86 OS X on illegal machines might not work on official Macintels.. so beware. It's good that legal users of OSX Intel are making a wiki of programs in UB.

What about a negative list?

How about a separate list of companies that have not yet made a commitment?

Here's one entry for a start - from Mathworks (regarding Matlab):
"unfortunately our developers were not able to evaluate the Intel Macs yet. So I do not know if MATLAB will work on a Intel based Macintosh. Same is true for developing a native version of MATLAB on Intel Macs. The is currently no timeframe for this kind of development."

That might not be too bad of an idea, since if you don't see something on the list you're most likely to go and check on it yourself. Capturing the people who come back and would like to post that there are no developments would not be a bad idea at all.

Wiki page needs a couple updates. Elgato released universal binaries, and MOTU has had universal drivers available for a few weeks now for their FW and USB gear.

Also Digidesign has announced Pro Tools LE software will ship in May, no commitment yet for Pro Tools TDM.

And from spectrasonics.net, they already have a beta available of Stylus RMX, and announced future versions of their stuff, although it may take a little while.

This must have been asked befor but I cannot find it. Is there some way to know if a given app is a universal binary? I know the info for a given app will tell you but it would be nice to have an indicator maybe in the menu bar?

Select the app, then go to File: Get Info. In the "General" pane of the window that shows up, it'll say "Kind: Application (PowerPC)" if it's a PPC, but "Kind" Application (Universal)" if it's for both (and, presumably "Kind: Application (Intel)" if it's just for Intel).

Someone might consider jumping on to the Universal Binary Wiki to move SuperDuper! from "Announced" to "Released."

(FWIW, I would do it myself -- really, I tried -- but I can't log in with my MR user name and I'm not going to jump through my own butt-hole to conform my "_" character to someone else's half-assed database structure. Does that make me less of a team player? Maybe....)
