Apple may have been putting most of their resources into the ipad, hence little movement on updates for the iphone.
I wonder do they feel they can't improve the iphone much more and we may never multi tasking on the platform.
Hope I'm wrong but one would have expected at least a mention of a software revision on Wednesday. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with the phone but will need something substantial for me to upgrade my 3gs in the summer again

Has Apple ever announced a new version of the iPhone OS or of the iPhone in January? As far as I can remember, it's always been in March. So why would you expect anything different now?

I really doubt that. The iPhone is a huge market and is growing at a very fast pace. It is doubtful the iPad will even be a drop in the bucket when it comes to market size. My guess is they held off on any iPhone announcements this past week so they wouldn't steal any thunder from the iPad. If they announced the iPhone was getting a bunch of upgrades, then even more people would question the need for an iPad.

Why would you need to upgrade your phone for a software update?
