If you select the icon what weather App comes up? detailed forecast and everything?

It's working well for me. It's the default weather app which uses yahoo. Here's my homescreen showing the app (top right corner) and then when I open it. It's just a preview of the app itself as an icon.

I am still having the issue that it does not seem to update unless i open the app.

On the plus side i have seen no issue with battery life.

I think it would be nice to have the option to have this on your lock screen as well so you dont even have to open your phone!! Has anyone suggested this to the author yet?

At some point i hope the app forceast will be updated for iOS 7, this was a neat way to get the weather on your lock screen

The app has been updated, you can now choose a different app for the icon to open.

Another new update: You can remove the text and chance the update frequency
