I just got the new MacBook Pro 13" Retina w/ 128GB. I love the MacBook however what is up with the 128GB how are you supposed to live with that and not be 75% full...

I do have the new 27" iMac 5K with 3TB fusion drive, 32 GB of ram and 4gb of video and Quad-Core i7 4.0 ghz. That thing is a beast.

I wanted to get the new MacBook but decided besides the design it sucks so I went MacBook Pro because it has connections and things.

I thought hmmm I can get a 256GB SDXC class 10 card and slip in there for more memory. However I get the card and the slot only takes the card half way. That's not going to work... So I'm going to send that back.

I feel like I have this great laptop that's limited by a ***** small HD. How do we survive with a nice budget laptop that isn't a fancy netbook???

share your iMac to your MBP and share the screen and save files to it etc. I always just get the smallest hard drive as i use a time capsule and dropbox. If you have a ton of space on iMac...no need for a giant hard drive on ur laptop...IMO.

The drives in these things are not the same as normal SSD drives?

I have a 13" MBP (non retina) and just swapped out my HD for the 480 Gb AMD Radeon SSD. I was at 180 Gb used roughly and I do a lot of photo edits so.... 128 Gb? yucky!

But I guess all photos could be stored on an external drive. but that's just a pain in the butt.

Can you order the original drives for these things in larger sizes? Like actual OEm parts or does it only come in 128 Gb?

Nope they are extremely hard to find as you have to buy one from Ebay. They are either pulled from an existing machine or somehow grabbed from a parts supplier. No one makes a replacement yet.

I love my 128GB 2015 rMBP. This computer has replaced my iPad Air 2. I keep my iTunes and iphoto on an external Samsung 850 EVO 256GB SSD. The SSD is naked and I use a Starteck UASP adapter which makes everything very slim and compact. After I rid the computer of unnecessary languages and garage band I'm still well over 100GB with all my apps installed.

Really I'm not looking to store tons of music and all that maybe a few things here and there for a trip. Photos are done on the iMac so it might be a temp storage or work on the fly kinda thing. Maybe I'm just scared by the number.

LOL, I just "forked over" 3,500.00 + for my new iMac in March. I'm not cheap perhaps budget is the wrong word.

----------

I guess I can live with the card sticking out halfway. I just wish it would be flush to look nicer.

----------

Perhaps I'll get that Airport Time Capsule or just remote into my iMac.

so if you are not cheap why didn't you just go with the higher priced more storage option? there are people like us that needs the storage to store stuff and there are people who wants the cheaper price point and dont care about storage

I love how on iOS devices with 128GB people are saying that they have so much freedom, then on OS X people are struggling to save up on storage. This is one reason why I prefer iOS.

I don't store my RAW photo library on iOS, nor do I have virtual machines on iOS, so I would definitely not fill up 128GB quickly on an iOS device. On my 512GB SSD I have 216GB free. I got just the right size I needed.

Did you learn that the SSD was only 128GB after you already bought it??

Take it back. Get a model with a bigger SSD.

While a small SSD is a pain in the ass, you can absolutely live with it by managing an external hard drive. IMO if youre on a budget, the first thing you should sacrifice on a computer is the storage, rather than the ram or the processor which will cripple your laptop. I would definitely keep 128gb, but if you have money, return it! Good luck ;)

I lived with 128gb for about a week. Apple exchange policy in other news is pretty awesome. Still have a external SSD I use for anything else though. Cheap for overflow and FAST!!

I used the 128GB on my rMBP for some time but it was surprisingly difficult. I stored most things in Dropbox so just presumed it would be easy but I didn't consider the small things that take up space: downloading large files and not cleaning up or immediately transferring to an external, backing up iOS devices, etc. it quickly adds up. However it really comes down to your usage pattern and job; my wife could get away with 64GB if it wasn't for her iPhone back up.

Remember Dropbox uses your SSD still, so that could be why.

Perhaps they couldn't afford the higher spec option? I think his/her point was that 'only' spending $3,500 on a laptop doesn't make you a cheap person. It's not an insignificant amount of money for most people - even those who aren't 'cheap'

How much speed can you get with this Startech adapter? I'm thinking on buying one, but shipping and taxes makes it cost ardound $35. I'd only get one if it really does what it promises: make my USB 3.0 port BUSY at near 5Gbps rates :D

I have same external hd in a cheap enclosure. Unsure of speeds but a great portable way to dump stuff. I have 256gb rMBP but I back phone up onto external hd and keep some non essential stuff on it.

so we have a person that is not cheap (willing to spend the money), yet unwilling to spend $150 more for the 256gb, and complains about apple selling a 128gb option at more budget price.

as i said in my previous reply, 128gb is for the people that doesn't need tons of storage and prefer to save the money (this OP is not one of them) i rather apple have the 128gb at lower price option for people that need it than scrap it and starting at 256gb at a higher price (my gf has a 128gb, she only use it to go online and store text documents)

or are we complaining apple doesn't sell 256gb at the price of 128gb?

i'd recommend putting all media on an external drive. Programs alone rarely use 128gb

Am doing the same and have no complaints.. I have a company given Lenova 440p for office work. My Macbook pro is only for my personal use.. So no VM, no programming, no split OS etc etc.. Its purely for media purpose, web browsing, light photo editing and lots of reading.

I use my External HD for storing all my files...

Thus, it depends from person to person and for what purpose he/she needs the machine for.. Plus, the biggest factor.. your budget.. If there is no limit to your budget, everyone will want to buy a 1 TB flash storage macbook just like a car buyer with no budget limit will obviously opt for the highest end model of his choice of brand...

I personally think 128GB is more than enough for anybody. I mean, why would anybody need that much ram?

I have plenty of space but I like the idea of this mDrive from Adam Elements, its only £15 on amazon and I can use my current micro SD card.

I'm in the same boat. I have a iMac with 3 tb fusion drive. My laptop however is never more than 50% full. I have all my files synced up to drop box and iCloud. Any big movies I move on and off as necessary. My laptop is just their to compliment my iMac it's not my main machine. I don't know what I would do if I only had a MacBook. My iPhoto library is almost a terabyte on its own, as is my iTunes.
