Load Songs without iTunes

I've been away from iPhones for 2 years but plan to go back soon. With my S4 I can plug into laptop, create a drive and move songs into it - much simpler than dealing with iTunes. Same with photos.

Is there a way to do this with an iPhone, or do you always have to use iTunes?

unfortunately..YES. Even if you have VLC or ProPlayer apps...still have to go thru with Itunes.
