We all know that iTunes is gone. So it will need to be replaced by something else to take over the capability. I remember when iTunes worked by dragging and dropping stuff and it just worked. They killed off all of that and drove it into the ground with a deserved stake through the heart.

I have read speculation that the iPhone/iPad connectivity is going to part of a sidebar finder addon, but I am left to wonder if this will be tied in with MacOS 10.15 and those of us who can't or won't load that are going to get stuck.

What is the best app / way to connect to your iphone/ipad going forwards?

Connecting to the device will be a mixture of Finder and the new apps. Finder can do backups, restores, software updates, but the new Music, Podcast, and TV apps also have syncing options for their contents. This behaviour is tied to macOS 10.15, yes.
With older versions of macOS you should be able to continue using iTunes I'd imagine. The Windows folk will do the same.

iTunes is gone, yes. But only for 10.15 or newer users. All other users using 10.14 and older can still use iTunes to do all the tasks they are familiar with for as long as they can.

But the question comes in to how long iTunes will be supported. I know that with my current 10.13 it tells me that I have to upgrade to a newer version of iTumes than what is loaded to link to my iPad Pro. Funny, I have an several older iPods that still work, and they complain that they are not supported with the latest version of iTunes, so it's sort of a limbo stuck that I have to decide if I want to be able to change and use my older iPods (I have one linked up in my car and one hooked up to my treadmill) or want to be able to sync new stuff to my new iPad.

My fear is that iPadOS is going to add a new change to the way that things communicate and it is going to be Apples way of saying that you just have to rely on out iCloud services to do everything and you must stream music from us and...
