Loading tom tom maps onto car sat nav unit??

Hello

Sorry if in the wrong section but couldn't find one dedicated to this area.

I am buying a 'my guide 3218' sat nav and have been told i can upload tomtom v.7 or garmin xt maps onto this as they are better maps than the one with the unit - think it's turbodog!

can anyone tell me how easy this is?

is it a case of plugging the unit into my mac book pro via usb and dragging the tomtom or garmin file onto the sd card??
