Does my phone's GPS remain active the entire time, causing a significant drain on my battery (even though I have no location reminder set?)

Let me know if you need anymore detail.

    Thank you.

If you have some location based alerts/services set up then some GPS services will be in use at times for geofencing purposes to essentially know where you are and where to trigger the alert. The battery usage should be much less compared to regular GPS use (for things like navigation, for example), but more than no use of GPS at all.

Will the system service itself use battery even if I don't have any alerts set?

    It shouldn't.
