Locked out at boot time

Whenever I try to access Recovery mode or Option at boot time all I get is a padlock and when I enter the password nothing happens. There is no Disk utility menu on the top left part of the screen. Works fine otherwise. I am using 10.12.

There shouldn't be an option for disk utility, you need to be able to start into recovery or off a bootable disk first. If nothing happens, maybe it's a different password?

OK bcave098, thanks for your answers, I was entering the wrong password, going to the bathroom now to wipe all those eggs off my face...
