My HD icon always move back to the orginal position on the desktop after I shifted it . How do I lock the HD icon into the position I wanted?

Why do you want the HD icon on the desktop at all? If you click the finder icon on the dock it opens the finder to the HD anyway. In fact any folder you click on will take you to the HD very easily.

Because the icon on the desktop will open if you click/drag and hover a file over it.

The Finder icon does not.

That's *huge* functionality for me.

The icon is there since day 1. How to make the HD icon stay put there?
Finder / Preferences / General

EDIT: Sorry, I misunderstood the question. The only way to "lock" that icon into place is to let Finder sort stuff automatically, then it lands in the upper-right corner.

That said, you should be able to sort those icons yourself! Just click on your desktop and hit Command-J, then uncheck the "Keep arranged by" box.

The boot drive is always the uppermost icon. I don't know of any way to change that behaviour.

mine is always uncheck. but just do not stay at the upper right hand corner.😕

You don't have a desktop with so many icons that they don't all fit, do you? That will cause the issue you're experiencing - if there's no room, Mac OS X stacks icons, booting others out of the way if need be - including the hard drive icons.
