I think it's a good update. Love the new pedalboard and some of the other features. Should probably be 8.5, however...

and the big negative, no printed manuals!

Watching the videos I do love the smaller things like advance quantize and the channel strip naming.

Yes, the small details will make a big difference, like the new Key focus. I like the track and project notes. Amazing that web links work from the notes, and notes can be viewed and edited in Mixer view!

I miss the printed manuals too. Of course are they in pdf on the mac. But I use the printed manuals quiet sometimes with Logic 8....

Apple saves there a lot of money too, and the price of Logic is the same. Don't know about that...

I am disappointed about not having the manuals and not having a PDF version included. It makes looking up information when away from the computer, and searching for specific info, difficult.

I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow, as I've finally finished some projects in Logic 7, and I only got around to using Logic 8 live, i felt so much more comfortable not having to take the dongle on stage.

I will be a little disappointed that there are no longer printed manuals, as I found the ones i had for version 6, 7 and 8 pretty handy for a quick reference when I'd forgotten how to do something.

Having used Pro Tools 7.4 and more recently 8 a lot at work I'll be interested how Logic 9 holds up, as there are a few features I use in Pro Tools that I'd love to see in Logic.

Also of note, does anyone know if STP3 can actually be used as a wave editor without blowing your speakers/deafening you now, that bug in STP2 was unforgivable, and it was noted nearly two years ago without a fix. Previewing a mono file with any FX on there would cause mayhem, and possibly hearing damage for those who don't know the bug. If not I'm still gonna have to keep XP running for Sound Forge 8.

In fact now that I think of it, that STP2 bug cost me a pair of really nice Sennheiser headphones, I should really sue Apple and get them to buy me a new pair, but I should be grateful that it didn't blow my tweeters or cause any hearing damage though.

i just started using logic pro 9 last week and it doesnt seem to be to much different then 8 a few new features and is expecially good if you work with allot of audio files.. is it worth the money to upgrade from 8 I would say yet cause the upgrade is cheap once you learn how to use all the new features your workflow will increase dramatically

They really need to provide at minimum a PDF manual. This is a problem for me trying to learn the program. :(

update LE8 to LS9?

Does anybody know if I get the $299 upgrade to go from Logic Express 8 to Logic Studio 9? The product description on Apple's page doesn't really specify whether the upgrade is only for LE9, although I'm hopeful since LE9 hasn't been released yet:)

Also, here's a review I thought was useful (if overwhelmingly positive):

Thanks for the review.

Yeah it looks like you can uprade from any version of express to Logic studio seeing as they also allow those using big box (pre Logic express 7) to upgrade for the same cost.

Check with your local apple store but it looks fine.

I must say that I give Apple kudos for not including all of that printed matter.

That's a shame. I loved the fact that they came with good quality printed material. Electronic documentation has to be the single most annoying thing in existance, plus it just means I have to print it out myself anyway so it saves nothing really.

To each their own. I hate printed manuals, I much prefer a searchable and easily stored electronic one. Especially for a piece of software, since I'm sitting in front of my computer when I need the manual anyway.

why is it annoying? i applaude apple greatly for finally not including the huge manuals, its way better for the environment and why would you print it out? just use the pdf's.

I definitely think printed manuals should be included with a complex piece of professional software like this. As well as a PDF version.

I just find it easier to read a printed manual than read a manual on the screen.

i see, well i find no difference in it really, but Apple does supply printed manuals for a fee $. i sorta like the idea that you have to pay premium, in order to get a large book of paper, sort of like saying that only those who really will use it and not just throw it away will buy it. Which saves a lot of tree's from the logic users who never even use it.

On the other hand im not sure how much it cost to get said manual from apple, but knowing them its priced on the higher end of the scale

Just put the order in for the express=>studio upgrade -- I'm really psyched about all the new features (esp flextime) as well as the old (multipressor, samples, waveburner).

I do sorta miss having the hard-copy manual. Sometimes you just pick it up (when you're not working), and discover something cool. But I do see the logic (no pun intended) in leaving it electronic unless someone is willing to pay extra.

It's sort of crazy -- however much the software development costs, the per-unit manufacturing cost is basically negligible:7 DVDs and a pretty little box. They just have to set a price that optimizes buyers*retail price.

Because I want to use the application while I am reading.

If it is in PDF format I either read or use the application. With printed manuals I can have them open in front of me while I use it.
