So, does logic express feature any kind of pitch correction? According to the feature comparison it doesn't, but surely there's some kind of compromise between the garageband one and the "high end" logic pro one?

Reason I ask is I'm tempted to buy Logic Express in place of GarageBand 2.

You mean real-time pitch correction?

Only Logic Pro currently has that feature. Most people use Autotune from Antares as a plug-in.

Logic express will alter pitch and speed of a recording independently, and also allows loop key matching like garageband, if that's what you meant.

Do you have access to the Educational Discount? Apple are offering Logic Pro for very low prices currently.

One note - there are pitch and time correction capabilities in GB that have yet to make it into Logic - don't ask me why... I'm just pleased as punch that the consumer app is getting good features well before the Pro apps.
