I just bought Logic Express and so far I am very happy with it. However, I have been having problems with using my Macbook's built-in line in to record into Logic.
I have an acoustic 5-string violin fitted with a Realist pickup. I plugged the pickup into a 1/4-inch cable and then used a 1/4-to-1/8 converter to run it into my Macbook. At first I forgot to set my sound input to the line in, so I was getting horrible feedback. When I selected the line both in the system preferences and Logic's preferences, the feedback disappeared but there was no apparent signal.
I tried recording a few notes and then turned up the channel volume in Logic as well as on my speakers. The recording seemed to have been successful but the result was very faint. So I thought, "well this is just a matter of amplifying the incoming signal." I wired the violin through a Digitech effects pedal with the level turned up all the way and then into my computer, thinking that it would boost the signal enough for it to be heard. However, after that the signal seemed to have disappeared entirely. No sign of incoming sound, nothing coming out when I turned on input monitoring, and nothing to be heard even after I recorded and turned up my speakers and channel volume.
There is still a crackling when I put the 1/4-1/8 converter in and out of the line in jack, indicating that something must be working, but other than that there is no sign that I even have anything plugged in. The ironic thing is that under the product details for the Realist pickup, it says "Does not require a pre-amp or other active, battery powered gear."
I almost forgot - I am borrowing a Mark Wood Stingray 5-string electric violin (which I unfortunately do not have with me at the moment). Before I got Logic I tried recording this electric violin into GarageBand, with the same lack of result as I got with Logic. Then I tried the same process on a friend's computer, and it worked fine, which suggests to me that the problem is with my computer and not with my instrument.
