I've been wanting to get into making music for ages but I'm not sure if I can justify spending £200 on a bit of software I might get bored of using after a couple of days. I have a MIDI keyboard and everything.

Trust me, you'll justify it quickly if you have any interest in audio production. It's an excellent bit of kit that is not only easy to use but packed to the brim with creative features. You just can't compare it to GarageBand, which is more or less a tracker/arranger for MIDI and basic audio editor.

Though Pro Tools is still the industry platform, many producers are now switching back to Logic.

Also most other professional DAWs are subscription-based, which makes Logic something of a welcome rarity. Plus, you'll soon match the equivalent price of a subscription, meaning that in the long run it's a total bargain.

Jokes on the people that laugh about the Touch Bar in this thread, but I really freaking miss it. And you'll never guess what for... entering emoji.

Like really, my job is customer support and emojis really satisfy these noobs. ctrl + cmd + space isn't cutting it for me, nor does the fn button as I use it for language switching.

😢

Garage band will do fine for free (if you are on a Mac LOL)

Stop posting about it here and start playing with GarageBand then.

My advice has always been to start with Garage Band and then upgrade only if you see a real need. If you just want to record your keyboard as a midi file or play sample GB is fine. Later if you have to Logic can import GB files

You can actually have TouchBar on your screen using this little app

I would have really expected that new ableton style 'effects rack' row-layout of plugins to transfer from iPad to Mac and I was ready for it. But unfortunately it's not here (yet).

GarageBand was updated from version 10 to 11 three years ago with the first Apple Silicon Macs and the release of Mac OS 11 Big Sur. But iMovie has only had small updates since version 10 came out, well, ten years ago. I wonder when that's getting a version 11?

I wonder how the new Mastering Assistant features in the latest Logic update will stack up against Izotope’s offerings, like Ozone. Has anyone had the chance to compare them yet? Excited to check it out and hear your thoughts!
