login failed with odd symbol appearing???

Hi folks,
I checked the forum but couldn't find a past post that answered my problem, so here goes:

When I login to my computer everything is fine. But if the computer sleeps and wakes up, thus re-asking for my password, it shows a funny symbol (see pic) and doesn't accept my password. I have to restart the computer and then it's fine again because that odd symbol doesn't show up.

Any ideas?
