Well, my point was that the 10.5" Pro and 10.5" Air 3 are the same size, but 10.2" iPad 7 is a different depth. That means the case might either be a bit loose on the 10.5" models or else a bit tight on the 10.2".

The 10.2 has it's own part no. for the trackpad keyboard.

I hope someone makes more of a "dock" that is meant to stay on a counter and the iPad can just "sit in it" and be easily/quickly pulled off of it.

I don't want to tote around an entire "keyboard case" on my iPad at all times...but would like to be able to set it in a dock and then use the keyboard/trackpad functions, but then grab the iPad and use it as a normal on its own tablet around the house quickly/easily.

For me this is a daily routine right now with a normal metal stand and desktop BT Magic Keyboard

Presumably you never actually opened the links that show the keyboard/trackpad to be detachable?

You're misunderstanding what I'm looking for.
I don't want to have to use any case on my iPad itself.

Doesn't the Logitech solution, while detachable, require the use of their case on the iPad itself?
(please forgive me if I'm wrong on that)

I'd like a docked solution that just makes use of the Dock Connector port and supports naked iPad usage.

Which $299/350 keyboard are you talking about?

The new Magic Keyboard ones

The only reason it would require it is to stop the ipad from falling over backwards (for the kickstand element).

If you have a solution for that... it should work. The fact it's detachable from the case means the case has no link at all to the smart connector. It's like a 2 piece kit rather than a single item.

Yeah, the kickstand part's the issue..

I really just want a dock that has keyboard/trackpad/stand as one component and it's truly designed to stay mostly in one place. Sort of a "kitchen" or "office" iPad docking station of sorts that allows you to just pick up the bare iPad and walk off and do other stuff with it - instantly.

Admittedly, this is a bit of niche product for sure.

Definitely looks interesting, might pick one up for my Air (Never liked the 1st Gen Smart Keyboard, and the other options were meh anyway). I wonder how long it’ll be “Currently Unavailable” though? I guess they just wanted to announce it along with Apple’s new keyboard, but I hope it’s not too long until we can actually buy it.

EDIT: Dang, looks like it’s gonna be a few weeks:

”The case will start shipping in May. That’s also when Apple plans to begin shipping its new keyboard case. iPad trackpad support is due to arrive in iPadOS on March 24th.”

It makes me really want to ditch my 6th Gen for an air. I just can't bring myself to get something with an A12 when I already have a mini 5, and I'm definitely not keen on going sideways to a 7th gen.

Make this for the Pros around $200 and will take sell a ton since Apple's are $299/350.

Looks really nice too; almost like a Surface one (which is a good thing)

I bet they have kind of deal in place with Apple to make this only for the lower tier iPads in exchange for letting them be the first to release a third party trackpad. Would be nice to get it for newer pros though.

This is for the 7th gen iPad as well, it is listed in the tech specs on the bottom of the page.

This was the biggest feature missing for me when I tried to use my Ipad as a computer replacement. There are other issues. But the trackpad was my biggest one. Just felt ergonomically unnatural to constantly have to reach for the screen when I was typing a lot. Excited to check this out in person.

The iPad is neither a cheap device nor does it even run a full-featured operating system. Its non-existent input devices - read: keyboard, mouse, trackpad - make it an awful choice for a "computer replacement". Now they add keyboards and trackpads which basically turn the iPad into a... NOTEBOOK. But still with a crippled operating system.

May I ask WHY anyone would want to use this device as a notebook replacement, when you can get a real notebook with full featured software for even less money?

In all honesty: I don't get why anybody would want to use such a machine with all these add-ons instead of the real thing.

I've already posted this elsewhere, but I have both a MacBook 12" 2017 (16 GB / 256 GB) and an iPad Pro 10.5" 2017 (4 GB / 64 GB). I use the iPad Pro 95% of the time. My next purchase will be an iPad Pro (6 GB / 128 GB).

@Winni older people and/or people with focused and simpler needs.

For some people and usages, the extra complexity and overhead of macOS is a detractor.

Well, I understand your point. And it looks to me like an iPad Pro 11in plus pencil and trackpad keyboard is going to be a couple of hundred dollars more than the base MBA. So, for many people, you are right.

However, there are some people that really enjoy using the pencil for marking up documents, taking notes, and sketching diagrams for work or school. Also, as hard as it might be to believe, there are people that just plain prefer iPadOS and the whole touch experience.

For normal iPads, sure. But the Pros? Too expensive and overkill for their needs.

Subjective - just depends who we are talking about and what their budget and alternative considerations might be.

Not all older people or those with less performance needs are budget constrained (not at all in fact).

I really prefer how the 10.5 Pro keyboard cases can be detached. Biggest issue I had with the Smart Keyboard for the 11 is how it’s always along for the ride. Third party solutions require Bluetooth and separate charging, not ideal.

10.5" Pro and 10.5" Air have the same dimensions.
Sure but compatibility isn't always a given. Some cases designed specifically for the Air block the LED flash and extra speakers on the Pro 10.5.

Thankfully, this one works for both. Checked the product page on Logitech and the images do show openings at the top for the speakers as well as a bigger opening for the camera. Heavy, though (610g) and the case seems pretty thick.

I would like a trackpad keyboard for the old iPad Pro

Apple’s 299$ ones will also work with iPad Pros from 2018. I guess any keyboard with a trackpad that may be released for the new iPad Pros will, provided they fit the same physical dimensions. 🤚

I like the keyboard part although the case seems a bit thick. Hopefully there will be other 3rd party options with thinner cases, but I’m not holding my breath as smart connector accessories seem to be unpopular with the manufacturers...

Man this case looks thick as hell and weighs 50% more than the iPad itself... hope we see some slimmer cases with trackpads...

I wish they'd make one for the older generation 12.9" iPad. I've not seen any options for them
Yep.

That said, the fully detachable keyboard+trackpad probably means I can use this on all my devices (2017 Pro 12.9 & 10.5, Air 3). I use SmartCase clones on my iPads and I reckon the trifold stand on those will work fine with the Logitech keyboard+trackpad on flat surfaces (which is pretty much the only time I need keyboard/mouse).

hey - logitech comes through again - way lower cost than aapl model
been using logitech stuff for years and works well
