The solution to my problems arrived yesterday. The adapter talks to the PS3 via Bluetooth and receives IR input from any Harmony remotes.
Works instantly requiring only a power source and one-time sync and can be placed a good distance away from PS3. The remote needs to be updated after installation and works flawlessly including the ability to turn PS3 ON/OFF!
