I bought an MX Master yesterday and now I'm very, VERY frustrated! ;)

The MX Master is supposed to have these 2 scrollwheel modes (and of course their new Smartshift mode, which automatically switch from one to another depending on how you spin the wheel): ratchet or freespin. With a button right below the wheel to activate one or another. I already own an old M500 corded mouse, and this function works perfectly - the freespin + smartscroll makes it a joy to scroll, browse, etc.

There's just one slight problem, the freespin mode won't work - at all. With the help of the Logitech Options utility, I've tried every possible combination (you can assign any function to this middle button), and it never, never does what I want: shifting between ratchet and freespin scrolling modes. The mouse is stuck in ratchet no matter what.

So I took it back and got a replacement - a defect product, it happens...no worries. What about the second one? Exact same behavior. No way to activate the freespin mode. And I tried a demo that the guy very gently opened for me at the store, same thing. 3 defect? No way. I'm starting to think I'm doing something wrong...but what could I possibly be doing wrong??? It's just one button that's supposed to work exactly as the one I already own, and as advertised, selecting the two modes via the utility software won't work either.

I even watched a couple of youtube videos and these guys apparently got it to work, I could clearly see, and hear, the wheel spinning freely, continously, and *silently*. One of the reasons I loved the freespin mode is the wheel is silent, ratchet makes too much noise for me. It's not unuseable but I don't like it.

It may seem like a small detail, but at $130 canadian dollars this mouse doesn't come cheap. This model is otherwise perfect for my needs: gestures, my hand sitting perfectly on the mouse, awesome design, horizontal scroll, very precise tracking, tons of customization - I'm left-handed but always used my mouses like a right-handed so there's no issue here.

So to all the MX Master owners out there: please tell how to magically activate, or manually switch, between the two scrolling modes, and I'll go buy a new one right now!

Tx :)

Just curious, what drivers are you using? I know the ratchet/freespin setting is triggered by a button but it's not strictly a mechanical switchover; software plays a hand in it as well (you can use the driver to force one mode or the other, regardless of whether you use the button to switch).

I'm using the latest version, 5.5, of Logitech Options utility.

...As it turns out, I got back from BestBuy with a new one (I really really wanted that mouse apparently:D), and started to use it about 5 minutes ago.....and.......drumroll........the scrollwheel works!!!! The middle button successfully swtiches between ratchet and freespin modes! wheeew!!! There's an additional noise that I hear when I click on the button, which I didn't hear with the other ones from yesterday. That's weird, how can 3 brand new products be defective? Anyway, it's solved now, the mouse works just perfectly and is a joy to use. I'm keeping my old M500 just in case, but the MX Master's new functions (horizontal scroll, gestures, etc) make it for a very enjoyable experience, and it's sooo comfortable! I'm happy! :)
