can't you tell I'm relatively new at this game: What does lol mean?:)

Tell me, when people said "lol" in conversations with you, and you didn't know what it meant, did it seem to you as if it meant something sort of mean? Like "No, lol".

That's what it seemed like to me before I learned what it meant, so i'm curious.

Possibly NSFW.

Since the OP asked the original question I'll add what this means. It means not safe for work. Definitely an important thing to know.

Crap -- did I just have a moment in which internet lingo appeared transparent to me? Did I really assume anyone would know what NSFW means?

I know everyone knows what it means. That's not the point.

The internet is ceaseless self-revelation. :(

Thanks, killuminati.

To anyone who often chats online or reads forums I'm sure NSFW is the same thing as writing out the word.

I just decided to clarify it because he asked what LOL meant and if he didn't know that...

I was wondering has anybody else noticed a huge decrease in the use of the word 'lol'? A couple years ago everybody was saying it every chance they got, and now I just see it occasionally.

Yes, I've noticed a decrease as well, thank God. That has to be one of the most annoying "IM speak" terms out there. I'm quite happy to be seeing less of it.

LOL!!!!11!!!1!!!! OMG WTF!!!!

God, that makes me want to punch people when they type like that...

I still use them, but with sarcasm. I don't anyone ever uses them strictly literally.

That and Apple has a widget on their website that allows you to look up the definitions of such web slang as "LOL". :)

EDIT- the widget is called Chat Acronyms.

We should start a poll documenting lol usage as related to time on internet. Perhaps also include a rough percentage of how often you actually laughed out loud while lol'ing.
Where's Doctor Q?

I never got the sux00rs thing.....or the other crap...I like LOL thing.

Bless
lucky you. hacc0rz, suxx0rz, teh, n00b, and all that other stuff is from a language called LEET (1337) that gamers and hackers use.

I've replaced "LOL" with more specific and amusing words for laughing, such as tee hee, hoo hoo, and mwahahaha. Back in middle school my friends and I got fed up with the ridiculously long acronyms for laughing (ROTFLMFAO for example) and made up our own super-LOL. It was something along the lines of HHHHHHSCMA and stood for Hee-Hee-Ha-Ha-Hoo-Hoo-Snicker-Chuckle-Moo-Achoo. We thought we were wildly amusing at the time. And my grandmother still types "LOL" in all her emails to mean it "Lots of Love."
