My wife is finally convinced that her 5s needs to go for a newer model. But she doesn’t want to spend a lot. She doesn’t care about tech and latest and greatest. She likes to spend wisely.

The 7 Plus is a year older than the 8 obviously but it has 3 Gb RAM and the 8 has 2. What phone do you reckon is going to get the longest support? Thanks in advance!

7 plus has 3GB but it has to render at retina 3x (heavier calculations).

8 is a retina 2x (easier graphical calculations).

The 8 has a foot in the X world with neural engine, bluetooth 5, Qi charging, more waterproof, etc...I’d say go with the 8 and its screaming A11 brains..

iPhone 8 4.7 easy over iPhone 7 plus. A11 is much much faster than the A10 processor. About 100% faster on multi core. A12 vs A11 is only about 15% faster.

since your wife is coming from a 5S, iphone 8's size will suit her a lot better. whatever model you choose, just pick the non plus size.

7 Plus is a better phone than the iPhone 8 IMO. Bigger screen, and better screen. More RAM. Dual-lens camera, with portrait mode.

Will the iPhone 8 get longer support? Maybe, but I'd rather use the 7 Plus on a daily basis than the 8.

Ultimately though, it comes down to what size phone she wants. I find a lot of women who have the luxury of carrying purses around actually prefer the bigger phones, but this is anecdotal.

Thank you all for your input. We went to the Apple store to have another look and my wife was much happier with the matt black 7 Plus in her hands. So that's what we got. I'm sure it's good enough for at least another 3-4 years. She's not into video editing or games.

Hmm. My wife has the 8plus I have the regular 7. I’ve hardly noticed any different in speed in day to day tasks. Single core is what’s most important for what most apps do on iOS right now. My iPhone 7 scores like 3540 and the wife’s scores like 4200 or somewhere around there. It’s up to about 25% faster than the 7 is what apple says. Yeah sure the a11 can combine all the cores together to get that super high 10000 mark on Geekbench but what actual real world app even uses that??

Aside from the larger dispay with the iPhone 7 Plus, I think the 7 Plus offers more with the larger battery and reports are indicating its performing very well on iOS 12. The 7 is fairly comporable to the 8, but it seems your wife wouldn’t appreciate the tangible upgrades with iPhone 8 with True Tone or wireless charging.
