Longtime Apple Designer Christopher Stringer's Latest Project Is a High-Fidelity Speaker With AirPlay 2

I don't know...if the speaker is making use of spacial audio it might worth the price as a high end designed speaker. I People that buy expensive brands because they don't know better are the ones buying Bang Olufsen TV's or Bose sound systems.
For the price, my Bose speakers are great.

(The price was free.)

Can't get avoid the laws of physics, if you want to reproduce fundamental bass, you need to move a lot of air with a relatively big piston. Major fault of the original Bose 901, the small speaker they used didn't have a long enough excursion on the tiny cones nor the surface area to move air. They sold an add on bass booster that was supposed to help, but sucked a lot of power, still lots of people bought the gimmick and they made a ton of money of them.

A better alternative would be to use a powered sub-woofer with the 901's then bass problem solved. When I was managing a retail store, sub-woofers were not on the market at the time of the 901's. We sold JBL, Advents and other traditional speakers.

Gotta love the hipster turntable. My buddies use to give me a hard time for buying LP’s over cassettes before the CD. Now they’re all spending $20 and up for vinyls. 😂
Yep, they're certainly going to get the most of a $2,000 speaker with that! </s>

Syngspace.com site is working fine for me and within our testing. I work at Syng and would like to know what browser/OS/device if you can share that you are having access problems. Sorry to hear about the difficulty but will certainly remedy. Let me know if you are still having trouble accessing.
Here's a minor issue with the text beneath that stand. The issue is seen on wider windows.

Audio is a funny field, and psychoacoustics is a really strange beast. Couple that with wealth and it gets even weirder. How much of high-end audio is snake oil and how much of it is real? It's unclear; remember the monster cable/coat hanger test?

Computational audio can actually adjust the sound. But the problem is always "adjust it to sound like what?" There's no "absolute" sound. Give ten different audio engineers something and you'll get ten different sounds. It's the same with speakers; every speaker is different, so what matters is the sound you like/want.

At this price point the value is in the listener's imagination. That's not to say the benefits of good audio aren't real, but the benefits to this (and high-end audio in general IMO) are more about inspiring the listener and less about "accurate sound reproduction."

TL;DR: yes, there are times where being able to hear the shapes of the concert halls is really great, but it's more about how the speaker inspires you than sound reproduction.

Right? I was going to say that they could have a phenomenal cartridge on there, but then saw the connection is over bluetooth. Why play vinyl if you're going to rasterize the signal anyway?
I hope the bass isn’t transmitted through the speaker base that’s next to the turntable. Strong vibrations may cause some needle skipping during playback.

Also, is Bluetooth still limited to 128kbps audio streams?

In what fantasy realm did you ever buy vinyls for under $20 in 2021-valued dollars?

I have a Mini that I’ve disabled almost everything on, so it can just be used as a cheap $99 thread device
What does that mean? Disabling the function of the device so it can connect to a thread network and do... what? Kinda sounds like saying "I disabled the web browser on this computer so it can just be used as a cheap ethernet device".

Triphonic, is that spatial steroe? Just asling because I have had the pleasure of owning a unique little speaker from Stereolith.ch (I don't work for them or am paid). The inventor Walter Schupbach in switzerland won the inventor prize for his concept of a truly three dimensional speaker where only one is required. It's fast and precise. It fooley cat who was fascinated by the delivery, as if it was real. They now sadly price this audiophile speaker at arounf $2200.- pricey but lasts a lifetime. I once wrote to Apple about this tech and that he is looking fo a partner, but got no reply. Oh well.

why is this very funny looking?
oh the jetsons' hanna or barbera (or their estate) is calling their lawyers.
cats would have a field day breaking this while confused birds attack the speakers looking for seeds.

The speaker would have sensors to account for this ambient noise, I am sure. 🙃

By any chance, are you on a 2016-2017 MBP?

This looks quite nice to me but I tend to love the analog audio look, which is a clear influence here. As for the price, it really depends on the sound quality. There are plenty of loudspeakers that cost well above this price, and true spacial audio often requires other equipment as well. While it's true (as some have pointed out here) that many "audiophiles" will opt for stereo rigs over something like this, there are plenty of audio enthusiasts that are looking for better sound than most all-in-one devices provide, but who still like a tidy package. We'll know more as soon as we see reviews.

Meanwhile all recorded music is still recorded in two channel stereo. I'll stick to stereo.
Two midtone aand one tweeter? Stereolith.com invented it. Been around since the 80's and has clients like Quincy Jones and many other famous artists who were looking for an accoustic experience that comes closest to real life. It woks, I have one :)

The design aesthetic isn't quite what I'd do, but it's something I could live with if the sound quality is good. But I wonder how good that will look once the fish bowl fills up with dust.

This is the bigger design fail to me, though:

Why not design it to run the cabling through the tube and exit at the base?

No, that makes sense. You want one easy access aux-in port (usb-c in this case) to temporarily plug things in. It is a fail if there isn't another one at the base for permanent connections though.

Well, I guess we'll see, since there doesn't appear to be a view of the back of the base on the website.

Ok I get a pair of Focal Chora 826 for 1400 Euro. They are looking better than this freaky spaceship and they sound better. Don't get the point of this overpriced piece.

Very funky looking speaker. I kind of like it. But I'm happy with what I have (HomePod), expensive or not.

I'll bet this is just as easy to keep clean from dust and scratches as the old Bang & Olufsen dingdong speakers (that is, not very).

Snark aside, this is truly the heir of that classic design. Gorgeous.
