Now that's potentially intriguing... I wonder what surprises this company might have in store for us... and I wonder when we'll find out!

What happened to his eye? Like, I'm not even trying to insult him, I'm just wondering.

I think he has a glass eye, or maybe muscular disease or damage to it. I see many places people making fun of his stare, like on The Verge. Quite sad that people (kids?) still do that sort of thing. My father had a damaged eye, and that one did look different because of it.

Explains a great many things......

He probably thought that iOS integration into Lion was a mistake.
He probably thought getting rid of Spaces was a mistake
And he probably thought that not paying any attention to memory management was a mistake

Exactly. As well as thoughtless ipad like skeuomorphisms, no new file system, no proper optimization of the os, not much core work etc.

OS X was his baby and his crowning achievement, when it was pushed aside for ios how could he stay? How could anyone stay and accept that os x will be a kernel behind ios? How could anyone stay and accept os x gets the b team of developers to work for it and most of the resources go to ios? As someone else said os x has been on a rolling beta for two years... they are, of course, right.

This is a little odd....clearly he knows some of Apple's future plans in the Cloud services space...so he quits the company to form a cloud service company?

Guess he knows something that Apple won't be touching any time soon.

Why are you getting defensive about that comment?

Maybe because someone who speaks two languages fluently, holds a doctorate and played a significant role over a decade in shaping the architecture of one of the few major desktop operating systems in the world doesn't deserve the retard tag?

Not that it is ever acceptable to call someone that.

I don't think this has anything to do with insulting mentally handicapped people or have malicious intent at all. The original comment mentioned Schwarzenegger, meaning that it had to do with his accent being out of the ordinary and funny, if you've ever seen any of Arnold's movies. Some of his lines are funny just cause of the way he says it compared to someone else.

Nobody is downplaying his accomplishments, I don't know why you even brought it up, the guy was just pointing out his accent. Yet some people HAVE to look at it defensively...

Back in March 2011, Apple announced that senior vice president of Mac Software Engineering Bertrand Serlet was leaving the company after over 20 years working with Steve Jobs at NeXT and Apple. Serlet and Apple were quiet about his future plans at the time, noting only that he wished to "focus less on products and more on science".

Business Insider now reports that Serlet has been working on a stealth Palo Alto-based startup known as Upthere.Additional digging by Business Insider revealed evidence in job postings and a Tweet that Serlet and former Apple and Oracle executive Roger Bodamer are involved with Upthere.

Serlet is known as one of the key figures behind the development of Mac OS X, and he made several appearances on stage during Apple keynotes, perhaps most notably at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in 2006 where he famously compared Windows Vista to Mac OS X Tiger in his "Redmond, start your photocopiers" presentation.

Fantastic idea.I am wishing him best. Thanks:)

This video is what lured me into being an Apple freak. Bertrand was so funny with this presentation. It's still an epic video. Please take the time to watch it. Just don't watch his glass eye too closely. Might creep you out. :apple::apple::apple:

This video and speech are quite sickening. Why do apple feel the need for this vile approach to marketing, insecurity would be my guess? Considering OSX was built on top of a build of Linux? Who innovated that OS and who copied it?

Windows is not a great product but it is the most used today and has been over the past 20 years. You can do things on PC's that are still is not possible on a Mac.

Apple need to be more humble. After all, history tells it's Windows that put money into apple to keep the company from bankruptcy. How about he ends his speech with Thanks windows, you've been their when we needed you the most.

I'm also tired of apples cheesy pc/Mac man campaigns, grow up apple it's embarrassing. I'd rather be the geeky guy with glasses who pioneered the PC industry than the idiot in the leather jacket thinking he is cool, yet knowing nothing about the computer he is using.

Get a grip. If this nonsense lurs you, you really have to stop and address your behavior. What's worse, the fool or the person that follows a fool.

Considering OSX was built on top of a build of Linux? Who innovated that OS and who copied it?

OS X is built on top of NeXTSTEP, which is built on top of Berkley Standard Distribution (BSD), which is built on top of AT&T Unix. Linux is an open source clone of Unix. Work began on Linux in 1991 i.e. a few years after NeXTSTEP actually shipped (1988). For the core of OS X to be "built on top of a build of Linux" would be quite some engineering feat as it would involve time travel.

At the time of that video (2006) Apple was very much still the the underdog. Vista Aero was clearly inspired by Aqua (and more importantly the graphical composting engine underneath which allows for GPU accelerated window compositing). Apple were rightly proud of Aero and the Quartz technology which enabled it. As both Microsoft and Apple have both since moved away from this glossy look and feel all of this is now kind of irrelevant.

As Bertrand Serlet worked at both Xerox PARC, NeXT and lead OS X development at Apple I'd say he had a very big hand in working on many of the technologies we all take for granted today. PC and Mac users alike.

None of the stuff he said was that inaccurate either: the Vista logo did look like a regular Windows logo with a large Aqua/Aero bubble around the outside. The whole skit was quite tongue and cheek and in the right spirit. Unfortunately it appears the subtly of the humour has been lost on some, which is a shame.

Which is funny, because they have long since stopped running those. And PC guy (Hodgson) made those commercials. Everyone loved PC guy, that was the point and part of the reason they were so successful.

There was no spirit. It's was a tactless, childish and dissrespectful speech. Apple seams to promote the need to point fingers at others within the industry and indulge in a belief of self importance. Again, Apple would have died many years ago if Windows did not support the company financially.

2 years ago apple attempted to restart the PC/Apple guy add's again. I believe they stopped as the general reaction was the same as mine, tacky and ignorant marketing.

It's very sad to see such influential people acting so cheap on stage. How can you respect peers if they offer such low respect for others in the industry.

Linux/unix... My point is still valid.

They didn't do it out of the kindness of their own hearts. Microsoft had kind of backed themselves into a corner.
Here's a couple of links which explain why: 1, 2, 3.

Apple and its executives have in the past been tremendously respectful of others in the industry. Tim Cook was very complimentary about the innovation and competition provided by Windows Phone, Phil Schiller on stage referred to Microsoft as great partners, Steve Jobs has praised intel, Microsoft, Sony and others on multiple occassions. If you are just cherry pick examples to suit your argument then that is disingenuous.

Linux/unix... My point is still valid.
Yes, all your points are perfectly valid. If you discard half the facts.

Elppa, are you sure you can see things clearly. I think the Apple logo obviously branded on your forehead is clouding your judgment.

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Apple had more cash in the bank at the time the MS agreement was signed than MS gave.

What was far more important about the deal was the guaranteed new versions of office.

and Linux ≠ Unix. Never has and never will.
