I wouldn't call that ludicrous considering the M1 supports PCIe 4.0 which could get 2.5x that speed, yet Apple chose to use 3.0 speeds on their Flash storage

If I had to guess, they do that so they have room to say they increased speed at the next launch of a newer one...

I have a Ryzen 5950X based desktop here wtih PCI4 and a PCI4 nvme drive and the thing is stupid fast.
 
I can hit 7000MB/s on my AMD 5950X PCI-4 with a pci-4 nvme drive...

edit: The drive is a Western Digital Black SN850 1TB M.2
