Hey what's up guys!

So looking for a very reputable 1TB minimum external SSD.

In the past, I've had great luck with OWC products drives - not sure there stand right now.

Haven't been keeping up, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

(Use with MBP M1 13" machine)

Cheers!

I know about the T3, T5 and T7 but never heard of the T6. I have three of the older Samsung T3's and two 2TB Samsung T7's. They are great, I get close to 1000MB/sec from the T7 on my 2018 (Intel) Mini with USB-C. But you should research this, I have seen several threads where people complain they can't get the full speed of external USB SSD's on the new M1 machines. If that is true, the T7 might not be much faster than a T5 on the M1.

Will this be 1080p video or 4k video?
Speed considerations might come into play, as in:
- USB3 -- 430MBps reads
- USB3.1 gen2 -- 825MBps reads
- Thunderbolt3 -- 2,000MBps reads

Yes this will be for 4k video thanks for noting this, didn't know there would be a difference.

That said, is Samsung still the best option?

No love for OWC huh? (there may be better just asking)

Sorry yes, T5/T7

Picked up the T7 1TB today - its awesome!

Thank you guys for the recommendation!

Have a feeling ill be needing another one soon, is there much downside to going cheaper and getting a T5?

This is what I get with a 2tb T7

Try the Blackmagic test yourself (is it compatible with the M1?). As I mentioned above, there have been multiple posts where people complained about not getting the full speed on the M1. I don't have a T5, but think it will give you around 500 MB/sec. If you can't get this kind of speed from the T7 on your M1, then the T5 may be a more economical choice with similar performance.

^ Not sure honestly, I never tested it. honestly didn't even know a disk speed test existed!

I've gone with something like this:

For a total of under $150. Granted, it's not as small as the T5/T7s but a bit cheaper and easier to upgrade when funds allow.

Well, you asked if there was a reason not to get the less expensive T5. This is how you can answer the question. I don't have an M1 computer and can't do the test for you. But if the reports I've read about USB speed on the M1 were correct, the T5 might be about the same speed as the T7. Here's the test, I see that it is now compatible with the M1.
