So if one is looking to buy a "new" Mac what are the best options besides the Apple store? Or is it like the IPod where there price is the same regardless of the seller?

You can use a mini display to vga port like any of these http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...ps&field-keywords=mini+display+to+vga&x=0&y=0

But you mention you have a relatively new screen, I'm pretty sure it will have either a DVI port (white port about the same size as VGA) or a HDMI port (about the same size as a USB port).

Either way, I would recommend the stock mac mini and then upgrade the RAM to 8 GB for ~$100.

You're right. It does have a DVI port.

Am I correct that the current Mini has a mini-DVI port?

No it has HDMI and mini display not mini-dvi. The new mini's come with a HDMI -> DVI adapter however, so your covered. If you upped the RAM to 8GB as a previous poster has suggested you would have a more than adequate machine, even 4GB would be plenty but 8 would future proof it nicely.

as your needs are pretty basic you could consider a refurbised Mini , but ...(there is always a but somewhere )
despite you got monitor and keyboard and mouse already ,and not that you would really have the need for a better monitor and keyboard , i would look to get a refurbished iMac 21.5 , it offers just more value for the money , but keep your mouse for a while ,as the magic mouse that comes with a iMac is not to everyones taste ;)
