I'm looking for a free or cheap stylish sans-serif font (ideally relatively condensed) for use in body text.

Unfortunately, some of the sans-serif fonts that come with a Mac very annoyingly don't include italic typefaces (eg, Lucida Grande, which I do really like, or Tahoma), Verdana I find too wide (and a little too plain), Trebuchet a little too bold, Gill Sans I like, but it always feels to me like a font for more special occasions and not for everyday use, Futura or Avenir too round, Helvetica or (shhh) Arial, too plain (I realise that that's their purpose).

Of additional fonts that I have tried so far, I reasonably like DejaVu Sans, but I find it just a little bit too wide. Droid Sans I really like, but again, no italics, unfortunately.

Can anyone perhaps suggest any other alternative fonts? Thanks!

Thanks! I didn't realise that Google had made their font collection available as downloadable TrueType fonts as well as Web Fonts.

It turns out that you can download the font collection from their repo: https://github.com/google/fonts/

They also mention some program SkyFonts which lets you select and install fonts automagically. Has anyone used it? I'm always a bit cynical about anything that shouts about its features a little too enthusiastically..? http://www.fonts.com/web-fonts/google

Now I just need to choose a couple of typefaces.. :-/
