i collect rifles and i'm building a light box to take photos in. essentially what i'm looking for is a low budget/free photo editing software for the mac that will allow some color adjustment and will allow me to white out the entire background or cut the object out of the pic and place on a white background. forgive my ignorance as i'm pretty new to macs and playing with my DSLR (a whole 5 months).

Preview can do basic image adjustments and has an Alpha "quick mask" feature.

iPhoto has a few more tools, and more advanced adjustments.

If you're putting the image on the web, iWeb can actually do some adjustments and has masking tools.

Give those a try - if you need more, there are some other free options, such as GIMP (though, it's probably not as "friendly" as the Apple apps, nor as integrated).

Pixelmator is probably the best choice in this case,
but you can also use Graphic Converter

For me, it is a "must have" app

Pixelmator Rocks!!!

Has taken about 60% of my workload from Photoshop because it is so much faster and prettier. I love it!

In fact it's so 'Apple' that I reckon Apple might even buy this one day to bundle with iLife. They Should.
