Looking for a NEW to me USED mbp w/ optical drive. Willing to sell NEW 2020 MBP 13 in w/ 256gb hd & 8 gigs of ram.

So... I had the misfortune of purchasing the 2012 MacBook pro with the defective graphics chip welded onto the motherboard. I took out the optical drive & the c drive it came with & replaced both w/ 1 tb hds & upgraded the ram to the max16gigs. I haven't been able to use it in 4 years.

I realized my Asurion home protection plan covered the repair..... I sent it in.. they couldn't fix it & so they replaced it with a new

• Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
• Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645
• 8GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory
• 256GB SSD storage¹
• 13-inch Retina display with True Tone
• Magic Keyboard
• Touch Bar and Touch ID
• Two Thunderbolt 3 ports

I dnt know if I should keep it.... I already have an external 1tb drive I can connect to it... or sell it unused & take the money and buy a used 15inch mbp with an optical drive.

I retained both 1tb drives & 16 gigs of memory.

Can ANYONE provide me with some suggestions for purchasing a good used 15 in. mbp w an i7 quad-core processor & optical drive which can work on the NEWEST mac os....

I have no problems with selling a NEW MacBook pro to purchase a much older one which I can upgrade on my own.
I would purchase one with the smallest hd & lowest amount of gigs because I can replace it with what I have already.

ANY help will be tremendously appreciated.

I need to know the exact year/model #of the device.... retna or non retna. (i don't know the difference btwn retna & non retna)

I ONLY wanta MBP with an optical drive so that I can remove the optical drive & add an additional hd.

Im also open to a flat out trade.... I live in NYC. Not willing to trade outside of NYC. Must trade in person.

I think the 15’ unibody pros are all plagued by their gpu, that’s very interesting to see home insurance cover that. Will home insurance detect that as fraud is sold? You can always get a 2014 15’ and buy an optical drive? But those have display coating issues, but warranty coverage I think.

2014 has SSD upgrade(have to buy a 10 dollar adapter to go from apple special connection to nvme’

there wasnt any fraud in what was done.... they offered the service.... I paid for it... my mac w& every other electronic device is covered... Pay the deductable & send in the item. I cant picture NOT taking advantage of an option I pay for.

Find 2012 one with matte hi-res display. It is half step to retina but it is not glossy. They are rare since most people preferred retinas as better and newer.
GPU is their know problem but they are not as plagued ones as 2011 Radeon models.
And btw last official OS is 10.15 for them. You most probably might be able to install BS with a patch but how well it will work is hard to be sure

It’s no problem, didn’t want you to think I was accusing you of something. Nvme is a type of SSD since the retina’s dont use standard hard drives. Maybe you can make a retina work since the gpu in the unibody isn’t great.

It might be the best value to keep it, since it was a free upgrade. If you would like, you can easily buy an optical drive from apple or any reputable company. Buying those unibody's kinda scares me; I have mine but it is a 13" from 2010 and I just use as a second monitor because of the pandemic.

I still have my 2015 15" rMBP and it works nice, I bet it will not get the update after Big Sur though. Since its been 5 years already but still runs great.

You can't buy a modern MacBook Pro with a built-in optical drive.
The last MBP to have one was the 2012 Unibody model.

If you currently have a brand new 2020 MBP, it MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL to trade it for an old MacBook just because it has an optical drive.

IMPOSSIBLE.
You cannot do this with retina MacBooks.
There is no space to do so, and no motherboard connection to use.
IMPOSSIBLE.

If you need more storage space than the internal drive has, you'll need to use an external drive of some sort.

I'd suggest something small and portable.

In my opinion, your best option would be to:
- buy an nvme "blade" SSD, 500gb or 1tb
- buy a USB3.1 gen2 enclosure for the blade drive
- put them together (some don't even require a screwdriver), and use that for your "extra storage".

But again -- NO SUCH THING as a post-2012 Unibody MacBook Pro that can have an additional drive installed inside.
These do not exist.

they can argue all day.... doesnt change the fact that the particular model has a long history of the problem I had.
