An SSD if you want speed but not necessarily capacity. A Seagate Momentus XT 750 GB for a good combination of speed and capacity at a reasonable price.

Remove the optical drive and install an SSD and storage drive.

Something like this WD drive would be close to a direct replacement for what you have in there now.
