i have two Verizon grandfathered unlimited data plans that go back to 2011. One has 450 minutes of call time and no texting (I use google voice) and the other has only 30 minutes of call time (I only use it in my iPad)

With the price increases of $20 per line for unlimited data I’m not sure if the value is still there. I love having unrestricted data but don’t really need it. I was letting a friend use the 30 minutes line and they were paying the monthly charge but with the increase they decided to stop. So I’m paying $170 per month for the two lines including fees etc.

Would it be a huge mistake to cancel one or both lines? I’m mostly wondering if there’s still significant value in these that I might be missing?

You stated yourself you don’t need it. Seems like a no-brainer. You can be sure price will continue to rise. Now that you pay all of it alone, seems $170 a month is a lot.

I’m willing to take your money in exchange for something you don’t need. :D

I would let it go. I kept my AT&T unlimited pan for years before I realized that I do not even come close to using it. I picked a plan that still is a bit more than I need and my cost were cut in HALF!

Definitely let both those plans go. They are way too much money for what you’re actually getting out of it.

There are a bunch of far cheaper solutions that offer unlimited calls, text AND unlimited data (LTE up to 50GBs for some of them then your speeds are throttled 2/3G speeds).

Also, look into switching to Sprint for a FREE year of service (if you bring your own compatible phone)! After the free year is up, you can shop around for more deals or stay with Sprint if it works for you.

Good luck.

Great advice everyone. I forgot one detail I do need Verizon towers. I am thinking I should be fine with one line. I’m thinking I could get a straight talk sim with unlimited data and service should be similar since they use Verizon towers?

I'm trying out Xfinity Mobile for this month. It uses Verizon towers and from what I have seen so far, I am getting the same exact super fast speeds that I was getting when I tried Verizon last month.

Lats night a speedtest topped out at 135Mbps. They have two plans, by the GB for $12 or unlimited for $45. I just got the by the GB since I'm only trying it out for now.

I've had Verizon, AT&T and T-mobile. I've currently been with T-mobile for the last 4 years, and in my opinion it's the best bang for the buck. Not sure what coverage is like countrywide, but here in NY I get great reception. A truly unlimited plan for $60 per line with two lines. When I had Verizon and AT&T, I was paying almost an extra $40-50 per month and it wasn't an unlimited plan.

It's true that there are plans that can better suit what your "needs" are, but if the option for an unlimited plan exists within a few dollars of a pre-determined data plan, I prefer having the peace of mind (especially when traveling)

Have you considered changing to a MVNO and saving a significant amount of money? There are several Verizon based options. You can easily pay <$60 per line and that would be on the high end. For example Xfinity Mobile is $45 for unlimited per line if you already have a service with them; otherwise it would be $55 per line.

Do you have Comcast/Xfinity cable services? If so, you might want to look into Xfinity mobile. Unlimited costs $45 plus fees. Or you can pay be the Gig $12/GB. They use Verizon's network.

Just get a modern unlimited plan. You'll save money, still have unlimited, and more features - like unlimited calls and texts. Then you can stop being the dude that has to use Google Voice, which is going the way of the dinosaurs soon anyway, as far as I know.

This is what I think I’m going to try. I have spectrum so xfinity probably isn’t available but I think I’m going to try an mvno like straight talk etc. I’ll probably still hold onto my gv number as long as possible as it’s GREAT for giving to businesses etc instead of your actual cell number

I think it’s a huge mistake paying Verizon $2k a year.

WTF $170! Wow heck no that’s 2k a year! Cancel ASAP. Dude I pay $35 a month. Enough data for me. But there’s unlimited data options with other carriers that are $45.

With the savings use that to travel or something. Or give me $2k.

I still use GV as my spam number lol. I hope it doesn’t go away.

Check out other carriers. There’s red pocket. It’s not unlimited but it’s $20 for 1 yr advance prepay for 5gb (I’m going with his plan). They have another one for $33 a month for 10. You pay for a yr service upfront an no visual voicemail.

Or go with att mvno like cricket that’s well price and unlimited is $45 for low speed, and$55-$60 of high speed (I have this service). Verizon also has an mvno with really great prices for around $45.

I thought straight talk uses att and T-Mobile?

I’ve seen in the past that they also use Verizon towers but that might have changed?
[doublepost=1548340577][/doublepost]It looks like spectrum mobile is in the process of allowing byod for apple phones. Cheapest plan is 1gb at only $14 per month. I’ll definitely be trying that out

Update: ported over one of my two Verizon lines to spectrum. So far so good. If it works well in my office I’ll upgrade to unlimited data and drop my other Verizon line saving me $120 per month. Thanks everyone

How was your experience with xfinity? I went to a spectrum mobile store yesterday and was in and out in 10 minutes. Cool store too they are going for the apple store vibe.

Are you using your old device on Spectrum or did you have to buy a new one from them? Where are you located? I've been wanting to switch to Spectrum but they don't allow bring your own device here. Our iPhones are new and I'm not about to buy new ones.

I went to the spectrum store in Staten Island New York. I was able to bring my iPhone in and they popped a new SIM card in and activated quickly. I called spectrum mobile and they gave me options to find the closest spectrum mobile store that allows byod.

My wife and I were paying AT&T $100+ each for our grandfathered unlimited plans. Whereas she's a heavy data user, I've only been using less than 1GB monthly. She had an iPhone 6 and wanted a new phone. I had a 5 and was definitely due for an upgrade. We switched to Spectrum Mobile with the $45 unlimited plan for her and the $14 plan for me. Add $41.67 each for 2 new iPhone Xs 64GB (0% interest 24 months) and we're still paying a lot less than we were paying AT&T with our old phones. The service (over Verizon network) has been great so far. Big plus that we get a good signal in our home, whereas with AT&T we had to go out on the front porch to make/take calls.

Straight Talk has plans on all the major networks, so if you go with them ensure that you get the SIM/plan for Verizon.

If you go over there and check coverage, you can indicate where you are bringing the phone from to see coverage.
