I am looking for an old (1980s-90s) Mac/Mac+ fantasy strategy game.

Here is what I have from memory:

It was black and white and 2D.

The graphics were maybe 8-bit, maybe a little better..(?)

I think it was turn-based.

You moved Armies of elves, dwarves, humans, giants and such (I think there were orcs or goblins) too around the map.

You could capture, build and destroy cities.

There were ruins that you could explore with your heroes/champions.

In the ruins you could find artefacts or allies such as dragons, griffons, wyverns or Wizards, who would give your armies a bonus in battle. You might also find nothing or have to fight a monster.

You could play each of the races.

Each race started with a prescribed capitol city. (I think)

You could also build ships and fight at sea.

I have no idea what it was called.

I played the game in the early 90s, but it may have been older than that.

sounds like heroes of might and magic II or III. Heroes III is one of my all time favorite strategy games and they just did an HD remake on steam!

Edit: Was not black and white though. Otherwise everything else you described is spot on.
