Looking for program

Ok so I have a mp4 video file that is 4.8 GB... I want to put it on a DVD, and I know it is too big. Is there a program (free) that I can convert it (unless mp4 is a better dvd format?) and shrink it to fit it onto dvd?

Check out Handbrake. It's free and you can set a desired target file size and quality will adjust automatically.
