this is for a an a/v presentation being run off VLC (which can play JPEGS but not PDFs etc.)

is there any simple app that will allow me to save text as a JPEG?

something very down & dirty and low-tech? for presentations that I'm doing more or less on the fly.

nothing complicated... like the example below.

open the document
verify the layout is still good
save as jpeg

dont blame me if it dosnt work

actually, a follow-up question: is there a way to get the CMD+SHIFT+4 command to save to a JPEG instead of a PNG? is there a way to set that in terminal. (I know, all of a sudden this question is getting somewhat technical!)

You don't need to make a screenshot. Preview has got all those tools too. Or QuickLook in Finder too.
 
using the Preview app you can "Exeport" a .png file into a jpg type file
