Hey guys im a new college student and am looking to take advantage of the student discount for a new iMac. I already have a macbook pro but I do alot of photoshop and editing overall in which im interested in buying a iMac. I was wondering with anyone who has one of the new iMac's that if they play HD videos very well no matter what codec (.h264, mkv) it may be. I do understand that the 9400m is a integrated graphics processor which uses the processor and ram, I will not play games at all just play hidef videos as well as edit. I would like to make sure with someone who has one that there is no lag of any sort or any problems with hidef videos.

    - New iMac 24", does it play hidef videos well, wont be playing any games just dont want any lag if I were to play hidef movies like it is on my macbook pro.

would me building a pc be a bit more worth it? I would like to stick with a mac but if the iMac is sufficient with playing hd videos and myself being able to edit them would be great as well.

Yes - you can always build a better PC for cheaper. Yes - the iMac can play HD movies just fine.

even the slowest/cheapest mac available today can play 1080p just fine. however do a search on "imac freezing", "imac random shutdown", and "imac graphic glitches" before making your purchase. know what you're getting into.

I suspect that you are referring to the freeze-ups that some users of 2009 iMacs with the ATI Radeon 4850 graphics option experienced during April and May, or there-abouts, prior to a firmware update from Apple. That update seems to have corrected the cases of freezes, and is part of currently-shipping iMacs.

My iMac 24" 3.06 GHz / 4850 system, which arrived April 10th, has never frozen (for what that's worth) despite a lot of World of Warcraft playing, image-editing, and active web browsing.

no, i'm referring to a deeper, more widespread problem that apple won't acknowledge re the logic board and overheating.

you've only had your imac since april. come back to this post in about 10 more months.

Yea it will play hi def videos with no problems at all. The CPU will be able to handle it so the graphics chip won't come in it. You will find that the 9400m is actually quite a capable chip, definitely capable of occasional gaming! [IMG]
