you will be perfect with the iMac, but may i suggest getting the ati4850 graphics upgrade? it will give you better performance with graphics-heavy tasks such as yours and will also help in snow leopard,
Which iMac will serve me for Final Cut and occasional After Effects? I have a big project, too and am tired of straining over my MacBook Pro... so the bigger screen of the 24 will be a relief.
Then I got worried that the next iMac will have touch screen capabilities and some other advances and I usually buy right before some big advance....

I would think that the 3.06 GHz. iMac with GT130 or Radeon card should be your best bet, but I'm sure my 2.93 GHz. iMac with GT120 is nearly as capable.
Did you consider buying Apple's 24" LED monitor and hooking it up to your Macbook Pro? Or perhaps an Apple 23" LCD where available?
Yeah, it's a good suggestion. I looked at a monitor, and maybe that's the smartest way to go, but then I think, I'm spending $900 for just a monitor and for another few bucks I get the iMac.... Also thinking that when I get my iPhone, maybe I won't need to carry around my laptop as much, so I could sell that.........

Think of the monitor as a long term investment. Let's say in a year you might want to upgrade to a Mac Pro. At least you have a high end monitor to hook it up to. With the iMac, it is all in one, so if you ever move to a Mac Pro, you'll end up spending well over $3,000 just to have a similar visual experience as the 24" iMac. The real advantage of the Mac Pro is its expandability and incredible speed in 3D/video apps. More than any iMac could hope for.
In the end, I say buy the monitor now and save up for a Mac Pro down the road. You'll probably be happier that way.
