That drive will work just fine. You Mac does not have USB3, but USB is backwards compatible so the drive will work.

When you first get it attach the drive then use Disk Utility to erase the drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
 
Looking to buy my first external hard drive to recover files on a problematic mid-2010 MBP before I restore it.
Can someone please recommend what I should be looking for?

But I'm not sure if I have a 'USB 3.0 port', and if it's compatible etc.

Honestly buy what you like they are all very much of a muchness these days as long as you stick to a reputable manufacturer.
