As the title says, I am looking to move on from Premiere Pro. Used to run Windows and Premiere Pro was really a hassle (even on a decent specced machine with a Ryzen 5600X, a RX 6600 and 64 gigs of Ram all running of a NVMe 4.0 SSD...) in terms of performance. It runs better on my new M1 Max MBP 14" but... I kinda don't want to be stuck paying 60 bucks for CC all my life. I can't get rid off Lightroom Classic just yet, so I'll have to stay with Adobe for a while, but being able to get that sub cost down a bit would be awesome so I was looking into alternatives.

I am editing for YouTube (4K footage) so I don't have the requirements of a film maker but I need to be able to edit good, do a bit of transition stuff, overlays, all that. I understand that on mac I have Apple's own software Final Cut Pro X (or no longer X?) and then there is Davinci Resolve which is free. Both of these tools are supposed to be on par with Premiere Pro where each might have their own specific strengths or weaknesses but it's all in the details.

My plan is to get both and just edit one video in Davinci and one in Final Cut, just to seee how these two tools handle. However before I spend a weekend diving into one of these tools, I was wondering if someone from a similar background like me has made the jump and if there is something wrong with my assumptions (i.e. FCPX and Davinci being just as good as Premiere Pro) or if I might have missed out on a major con or issue which would discount one of the two alternatives I am considering.

Lately, Final Cut Pro on the Mac seems to be able to do just about everything Adobe Premiere Pro can do. The main difference is the magnetic timeline, but it's fairly quick and easy to get used to. Final Cut Pro does all of the transition and overlay stuff very nicely, and with version 10.6 they finally added built-in motion tracking (no need to send it to the additional Motion app anymore for that case!)

There supposedly is a new FCP release maximized for the M1 although the results were reported being a bit disappointing as it wasn't fully using the M1's resources.

I believe you can still can get a version of Davinci resolve for free. Final Cut Pro 90 day free trial. I am having a play with FPC myself. It is a bit of a change from Premier. Different menu system and layout. Still I am going to keep at it for a while. Its worth watching some YouTube videos on the various part of FCP. There is a lot of good stuff on it.
