My Current setup is a 5th Gen Airport Extreme and a couple of Airport expresses around the house. Ive been starting to have some issues with the airport such as slow downs and random restarts. I saw online that the refurb store has the 6th Gen Airport for $129. While its not entirely necessary for me to upgrade the price is so low and AC is still very current and AD isn't going to be out for a while. I also am looking to centralize my Time Machine backups and the 2TB TC is $179 which isn't that bad. If I do end up upgrading I don't know which device to buy. I have a 3TB external that not really being used so I could just end up plugging that into a new Airport and have TM work or I could just get the TC and streamline the setup. I have a considerable amount of AC devices in the house and the connection coming into the home is a FiOS 150/150 fiber connection, so I think the upgrade to AC would be worth the cost.

I'm not a huge fan of the Apple routers because they are short on advanced features and a bit overpriced. But if you want to use a router for wireless Time Machine backups, an Apple router is the way to go IMO since it is officially supported for TM backups. I would get the Extreme and just use your existing 3TB drive to save some money.

Nothing wrong with the Time Capsule for this, but it costs more and if you go with the Extreme instead and your drive dies, you can just swap in another USB drive, unlike the Time Capsule.

op my older TC died about 2 weeks ago. Went rock solid for 4 years until the wifi went. Just picked up the newer TC, it's so much faster!

Works just the same pretty much, same easy set up. Took about 5 hours to back up 500gb with Ethernet connection. All the other backups over wifi seem quicker too.

Last March I purchased a Refurbished latest Generation 2TB TC from the Apple On-line Store and I am one happy customer! It backs-up my Time Machine flawlessly.

One benefit in this TC purchase is that the AppleCare on my MM(2014) also covers this TC until the year 2018 here in Costa Rica.

This is the same within N.America as well. Your Apple product that is under warranty (iMac, Mac Pro, Macbook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro) all extend the warranty or add warranty to the TC.
